Publisher's Summary

Here's a satisfying tale of honor, chance, and star-crossed love infused with Southern wit, grace, and charm.

After 20 years, Elizabeth "Betts" McGee has finally managed to put her past behind her. She hasn't been home to beautiful South Carolina and untouched Bulls Island since the tragic night that ended her engagement to Charleston's golden boy, J. D. Langley.

And why is that? Really, this is the story of two old Southern families. The Langley family has more money than the Morgan Stanley Bank. And they think they have more class. The Barrett family made their 19th-century fortune in a less distinguished manner: corner grocery and liquor stores. It's no surprise that when J. D. and Betts fall in love and decide to marry, their parents are none too pleased. And when the love affair comes to an end, everyone is ready to place blame.

Now 20 years have gone by, and Betts, a top investment bank executive, must leave her comfortable life in New York City to return to the home she thought she'd left behind forever. But spearheading the most important project of her career puts her back in contact with everything she's tried so hard to forget: her estranged sister, her father, J. D., and her past.

Once she's home, can Betts keep the secret that threatens all she holds dear? Or will her fear of the past wreck her future happiness? And what about that crazy gator? All will be revealed on Bulls Island.

    "Great Book"

I've read several of her books and I've enjoyed all of them. This one was really good. I love her humor. She can make you laugh and then cry. Very well written. Can't wait for the next book to come out.

    "Loved Betts McGhee!"
What made the experience of listening to Bulls Island the most enjoyable?

Great Low Country love story with lots of twists and turns. Honest dialogue and some very funny parts. Interesting characters with story lines that play out through the book. Visually rich descriptions of Charleston and the islands.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Betts was a smart and funny heroine. She goes out and makes a life for herself and learns the value of family when she could truly appreciate it. Nice mix of NY and Charleston adventures.

What does Julia Gibson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think Julia does a good job of varying tone and accent with the different characters without making herself one of them. Very easy going, pleasant read.

If you could take any character from Bulls Island out to dinner, who would it be and why?

JD Langley. He is smart and gorgeous and he knows what he wants...finally!

    Any additional comments?

Love Dorothea Benton Frank! Wonderful smart, funny and quirky characters that you care about. I love the meandering story lines that all come together in a smooth finish. Thank You!

    "Excellent"

Great story and great narrators. It is especially interesting to read as a Charleston native. It does give an accurate account of the lowcountry.

"boring, hated the fake Southern accent"

The narrator read so slow and the Southern accent was a little over the top. The cliches were over the top as well. It had a predictable ending. Predictable ....pridictable..

I kept waiting for it to get better

    "Not a worthy book."

I have read her other books primarily because I live in Charleston, SC and found them interesting for that reason. Her characters generally lack depth and believability, but this is the worst book to date. I will not bother with future books if there are any!
