Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

This is a great story about a black family's struggle in the 1930's in the Southern USA. I used the narrative (with the paperback books) in my middle school class (for 2 years now) and the students love it. Most of them have very limited knowledge of the Civil Rights struggle in America. We used the book along with speeches by JFK and ML King, Jr and segments of the Harriett Tubman story to survey slavery and civil rights in the United States. The narrarator does an excellent job telling this story. My students couldn't wait to get to the end, and then they wanted to read the next book in the Mildred Taylor collection!

The narrator is incredible, the story is beautiful and educational. A wonderful story which will lead to many enriching conversations about black history.

The chapters are completely off with the book. I use the audiobook for my reading class, and while the audiobook says chapter one, we were at the end of chapter 2. NOT TEACHER-FRIENDLY!

This was such a great story. It was authentic and gave so much insight into what was going on during this time period in the US.

I never read this book as a student growing up. I passed it over for years as a teacher but boy am I glad I read. I have already recommended it to students.

We both enjoyed Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry a lot. My daughter was sick and missed a week of school and listening to a good book really helped her pass the time. The characters are well developed and the story certainly gave us a lot to talk about. There were lots of plot lines that opened up various discussion topics. Thanks Audible for continuing to carry the classics - we love them.

Loved the narrating! Hated the fact that the chapters are lumped together making it near impossible to follow along with book in hand. Chapter 1 in audible is 3 book chapters combined!!!! You should be able to find and listen to one chapter from the book easily!

I enjoyed the story and it's characters. It reminded me of the stories that my parents shared with my brother & I of the struggles to survive in rural Alabama in the 1920's & 30's.

The narrator gave the story extra depth. It was a very rich and warm experience.
