Basketball Jones

Apparently I was not paying any attention when I got this audiobook. I thought it would be about professional athletes. No. It is about being gay in professional athletics. The main character was not even the pro basketball player. Basically it was sad book in that folks still cannot live as they are in our society. That is, in most all of pro leagues, you still cannot be openly gay. So, in that way, it was sad. However, the main character came to grips with his situation but everyone did not live happily ever after. I learned how it might be to be is such a situation in which you are an outcast and must live a secret life. So, it was interesting. Also interesting was the betrayal. I do not want to give too much away but if you can handle some gay sexual encounters, I recommend the book. I never lost interest and was pretty entertained wondering who was behind the blackmail.

Got this audio "book" from my sister. I am gay and I do enjoy my share of "guilty reading pleasures" and harmless fun-fiction. But this "novel" is not breezy, nor funny, nor light, nor entertaining nor anything positive. It makes the worst soap opera episode you have ever seen seem like a Shakespeare play. The story would have not been enough even for a short story, the characters and dialogue and development border on the retarded - and all is made even worse by the pompous narrator who gives the characters painfully-clicheed "voice attempts" and obviously tries to breathe some involuntarily hilarious depth into this shallow, dumb, annoying and boring caricature of a "novel".

Wow, I am 44 years old and I read a lot - this ranks as one of the worst "books" (I refuse to even call it a real book) I have ever read/heard. Beware.

I started listening to this book with out any expectations. I was hooked! As a gay man I could relate to the story in more ways than one. It quickly became my favorite. The narrator does such a good job. His voice is so SEXY! :-) I recommend it. Listen to if for your self...

I bought this book when it was first released and actually got to meet Mr. Harris at a book signing event. The characters in Basketball Jones come alive through E Lynn's brilliant writing abilities. Mirron Willis also does an admirable job of giving the characters, actions and scenes in the book life. A definite must read for all.

This is a wonderful and enlightening read! Could seem to put it down!
