    "Where is Dick Hill?"

I've just started this book, and having read every other Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child, I have no doubt I'm going to like the story, but...
This narrator is milk toast, when I really wanted a hot, buttery, cinnamon bun.
This narrator is weak tea, when I really wanted hot, black, coffee.
This narrator is near beer, when I really wanted a stiff shot of bourbon.
This narrator is Jonathan McClain, when I really wanted Dick Hill.
For me, Dick Hill is Jack Reacher. I'm sure McClain is a nice guy, and he reads well enough, but he is not Dick Hill, and for me, that means he is not Jack Reacher. I'm not through the first chapter, but I really miss Dick Hill.

    "Trouble always finds him!"

Once again our nomadic hero, Jack Reacher, wanders into trouble. This time it’s an abduction in progress involving a woman. They both become hostages, there is gun play, there are physical injuries, and a plot to overthrow the government is thwarted. In typical Reacher fashion he overcomes all and moves on to his next adventure.
This fun listen is iconic Reacher from beginning to end.
Jonathan McClain does a good job narrating.

"Story was interesting but sooooo drawn out"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

It took Reacher over 10 hours in this audio before he started to defending himself. This became very irritating after awhile. Parts of the plot were just not credible enough i.e. A person on the way to blow up people, the good guys know of four possible cities for the bomb, yet they tell no one so they can get assistance looking in all all locations but instead they guess where he's going. That's irresponsable and really stupid!

Would you recommend Die Trying to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes with a lot of caveats.

    Any additional comments?

The story was good and compelled me to spend the time to finish it but it took so long for the good guys to start fighting back, the book was actually putting me in a bad mood. I really like Jack Reachers character but I am not sure I want to read more in the series.

"really enjoyable, no problems with the narrator"

I came to this after listening to all the other Reacher books, as i had become accustomed to Dick Hill. OK, Reacher sounds different, but I cannot understand the criticism. I thought it was excellently narrated and the voices were good (at least to my British ears).

The story was really compelling and I finished it in two days. Overall a very good listen.

    "Pretty Great Actually"
If you could sum up Die Trying in three words, what would they be?

    Intense, Suspenseful, Exciting

    Any additional comments?

I've read most of the Reacher books and listened to a couple, but I have to say this ranks up there with my favorites. Some parts are little dated now (fax machines and videotape) but the heart of the story holds up great. Kept me guessing about the "bad guy" until the end.

I also thought the narration was terrific. I've heard Dick Hill also, but I thought Jonathan McClain sounded much younger, which fits more with my image of Jack Reacher. Also he had an intensity that I liked (not to mention I felt his female voices were better than most men I hear narrating audiobooks - they usually sound whiny or annoying).

I thought it was great. Totally worth a credit. Going to check out some more.

"I feel like I was robbed"

This Book was dressed up as a newly released Lee Child: Reacher Novel.
The narrator butchered this book. I feel like a fool for the fact I had bought it a year ago. It was presented in a manner that allowed me to not check my Reacher series.
I am ultimately at fault, this I can admit.
My ears still burn with the noises that Mr. Jonathan McClain made of the voices throughout the entire novel. I am certain he could perform well in a different genre, because of the redeeming quality I heard in the freeform pure narration parts but not the actual characters voices. This books intensity was displaced due to the characters being delivered in a cartoon like fashion.
I have never written a bad review because the books I have not liked are books that are not in my taste. Yet this time I am actually disturbed, and feel if someone had listened to this book with it’s Narration it may ruin the fantastic talent, and action Lee Child brings to life in the Reacher Series.

"hard time buying into the story."
Would you try another book from Lee Child and/or Jonathan McClain?

    Not sure, probably try another.

If you’ve listened to books by Lee Child before, how does this one compare?

If you read this after the Killing floor, and appreciated the plot and how the story unfolded then this one, in my opinion does do it as well. The whole story thing seems unlikely.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I never noticed in The Killing Floor, how often the character's conversations end with someone saying "Right?" Almost all the characters say this at the end of sentence,. In this book, with this narrator it's immediately jarring and continues throughout. I found it pretty distracting on top of a mediocre performance. If I listen to another of Child's books, I'll probably listen to a Dick Hill one.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Nope.

    "Frequent Listener"

Listened to the first book, it was great, read the reviews for the second and third where everyone dissed the narrater, can't agree with their call. Story line on this one was a little hokey with the militia members being brain dead zombies, but overall it was an interesting story that I enjoyed listening to. By the way, if Mr. McClain is a boring narrater, let me offer up some other books I've listened to. Mr. McClain does a good job, keeps the characters differentiated, only struggled with the female characters.

    "Impressive and exciting read"

I agree with some of the other reviewers that Dick Hill is the "real" Jack Reacher, and I have listened to both versions of this book. I have to say that Jonathan McClain does a great job with the non-Reacher characters, and his version of Reacher is certainly acceptable. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the book due to the narrator and actually think that he did a great job with the main villain. The story is one of the better Reacher stories, even if a certain degree of suspension disbelief is necessary. If you're a fan of the series or if you love thrillers of the Flynn, Clancy, Thor ilk, I think you'll enjoy this one.

    "WRONG narrator"
How did the narrator detract from the book?

I'll admit, I haven't even finished this book yet but I'm afraid I might not be able to due to the narrator. He really can't hold a candle for these books compared to Dick Hill and his treatment of Reacher and the other characters is laughable and completely ruins the tone/pacing of the book.
