They are outcasts. Hal, Stig, and the others - they are the boys the others want no part of. Skandians, as any reader of Ranger's Apprentice could tell you, are known for their size and strength. Not these boys. Yet that doesn't mean they don't have skills. And courage - which they will need every ounce of to do battle at sea against the other bands, the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race. The icy waters make for a treacherous playing field - especially when not everyone thinks of it as playing.
John Flanagan, author of the international phenomenon Ranger's Apprentice, creates a new cast of characters to populate his world of Skandians and Araluens, a world millions of young readers and listeners around the world have come to know and admire. Full of seafaring adventures and epic battles, Book 1 of The Brotherband Chronicles is sure to thrill fans of Ranger's Apprentice while enticing a whole new generation just now discovering the books.

"A great tale"
As usual Flanagan has created a story that entertains and teaches at the same time. Bullys who wound through words and deeds, personal and interpersonal challenges (alcoholism, facing disabilities, etc) all addressed through the bonds of friendship and teamwork. Great for kids and something for adults too.
"A wonderful listen"
For a kids book I greatly enjoyed the book and the reader. The since of pride and joy the boys go though in the book has you going "YEAH, you tell'um!" Even while you do the dishes. I can't even say that I have anything bad to say about it. This book was a great joy and even though nothing truly ever bad happens (no true drama like someone dyeing in battle) you don't have to worry about falling in love with a character only to have them die.
"Quality Entertainment for all ages."
This series was very enjoyable. The narrator was exceptionally consistent in voice for the various characters, making the book come to life. I had purchased this for my boys (ages 10 - 22) to listen to on long trips. As they would play over the car stereo, I got interested and even my wife has been excited to share this adventure with our boys. Another success for John Flanagan.

"WANT MORE!"
It ranks in the top 3 (For my son, it's #1). I bought this audio book per the wishes of my 11 yr old son...as I was trying to get him to enjoy reading thru audio... (he hates to read).. I thought the audio book was going to be boring... BUT we both ended up LOVING it! Listening to the Narrator, John Keating, is also fun... you end up trying to say the words in the story with his accent....Loved how he said
The whole book kept you wanting to listen to it every chance you had... Love when the outcasts become winners.... We loved listening to the part where Hal and his

My son and I can't wait for the next book! We wanted more ...... we checked and it's May of 2012..... uggg...
"very well done"
I never read the Ranger's Apprentice series, but watched it circulate heavily in my library. I chose to start with Brotherband Chronicles as I was browsing new releases in Audible for my commute (I hook my Kindle up) and decided it was time to see what the craze was about. I have to say the storytelling was great and I look forward to downloading the next one.
"disapointing"
i was disapointed i read online that it was about 2 brothers that were half araluen and half skandian running away on some quest not some kids that stand out going to some kind of contest sailing ships for there lives this was just disapointing i suggest if you like rangers apprentice dont get this book.
Audiobook Junkie... Love all types of Science Fiction
"Liked it"
After the Ranger Apprentice series Flanagan has created a well oiled world full of rich characters. Brotherband continues with a story about the Scandian's where we follow a young boy named Hal who is very smart and inventive young man unlike his fellow country men. This is definitely a fun listen and you don't need to have read the Ranger Apprentice to understand what is going on. The story leads you into a sequel so be prepared to wait for that to come out soon.
