Publisher's Summary

Here is an historic adventure of extraordinary power waiting to sweep you away to exotic lands as one of the most popular writers of our time conquers new storytelling worlds. Louis L'Amour has been best known for his ability to capture the spirit and drama of the authentic American West. Here, he guides listeners to an even more distant frontier - the enthralling lands of the 12th century.

At the center of The Walking Drum is Kerbouchard, one of L'Amour's greatest heroes. Warrior, lover, scholar, Kerbouchard is a daring seeker of knowledge and fortune bound on a journey of enormous challenge, danger, and revenge. Across the Europe, the Russian steppes and through the Byzantine wonder of Constantinople, gateway to Asia, Kerbouchard is thrust into the heart of the treacheries, passions, violence, and dazzling wonders of a magnificent time. From castle to slave gallery, from sword-racked battlefields to a princess's secret chamber, and ultimately, to the impregnable fortress of the Valley of Assassins, The Walking Drum is a powerful adventure of an ancient world you will find every bit as riveting as Louis L'Amour's stories of the American West.

    "Loved It!"

I got this book for my husband to listen to on a long car trip but he could not wait until then! He said this book was the best Louis L'Amour book that he has "read" yet.

I enjoy counter-terrorism, westerns, historical fiction, detective mysteries, and old school comedy like "A Christmas Story".

    "Really enjoyed!"

Great way to travel through history. I never enjoyed history in high school and college because I don't have great recall skills. However, when history is taught in a fictional storyline with living characters, history becomes very enjoyable and pleasant.

    "Really worth your time!"

So before I bought this book I was a little bit skeptical; the reason was because some of the reviews were negative. Some people thought the narration was bad while others thought the story moved much to quickly to follow. These people need to stick with their usual murder mysteries because I thought this was an incredible book with a lot to offer.

I am not usually interested in fiction, sticking mostly to my historical non-fiction and science literature; however, this story kept me on the edge of my seat. I recommend it for anyone of all ages.

"Great history lessons in a good story."
What made the experience of listening to The Walking Drum the most enjoyable?

The story takes place at a time when the European Christian world was going backward and the Arab Muslim world was where knowledge was celebrated. It celebrates knowledge and seeking more.

    "Not L'Amour's Best Work"
What did you like best about The Walking Drum? What did you like least?

The performance was well done. But it seemed like L'Amour wanted to tell every historical fact he knew about those days to the detriment of the story line. It just made the book very boring in many spots. I normally love his books, but this one just didn't work for me.

Have you listened to any of John Curless’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't believe this one was done as well as Sackett's Land and The Far Blue Mountains, but still well done.

    "Interesting Story with historical value"
What did you love best about The Walking Drum?

I enjoy the parts of the story with action; fighting, escaping from jail, etc.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way that it takes a person from Youth to Adulthood, and shows their trials and tribulations.

What does John Curless bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

John Curless has an interesting and expressive voice.

    Any additional comments?

There are a few sections with long descriptions of historical events that can get a bit boring- but other than that I really enjoyed the book.

    "Master of imagery?"

My cousin recommended L'Amour to me so I really wanted to like this. But it's like L'Amour made a movie of it first and frantically wrote down what was happening as it was playing. Too fast paced to have any imagery. I often had to rewind to catch up with what was happening. Thumbs down. Did not finish.
