"As cunningly woven as a spider's web." (Publishers Weekly)
"Painful to listen to"
I read the book in the 80's, enjoyed it. Thought I'd revisit it via Audible. The narration really sucks. The cuts between the voices sound artificial. My guess is that the individual characters and narration were all recorded separately, then some ham fisted editor spliced them altogether, removing much needed pauses between them. The individual bits also sound like they were recorded in different rooms. While a small distraction when you hear that in a book every hour or so, it's very bad when it's every few seconds, and between 2 characters supposedly talking in the same room.
David Morrell should be ticked off and push to get it re-recorded by Scott Brick
"Finished listening, but made me nuts!"
This book's plot got odder and odder and less believable as it plodded on to the finish. The different characters' voices surprised me each time they came on. I was really relieved when the book was over.
"Good Story - Terrible Narrator"
While I enjoyed the storyline and the main character(s) were intriguing, the narrator ruined the experience. Other than the dialogue, which he read reasonably well, he read much too rapidly and mechanically. It reminded me of the voice on my Amazon Kindle and, believe me, that is not a voice you want to listen to for long periods of time.
"Plot heavy"
Interesting concept, but the plot was too fast-moving and incident-ridden. Character development and scene description suffered, leaving me with the feeling I'd just read a story board for a TV series. The narrator's rushing through the reading didn't help. Slow down, guys! If we had attention spans of 5 minutes, we wouldn't bother to read books.
"How did this get 4 stars?"
I'm trying to get through this - I would like to know what happens - but the author keeps dumping us into flashbacks for what seems to be totally irrelevant back story. He may tie it all together, but by the time he does, I'm sure I will have lost interest. Even at one cent per minute (bought it on that special) it wasn't worth purchasing.
The dialog is terrible. Has this author ever listened to people talk?
