Publisher's summary

Nonny Frett understands the meanings of "rock" and "hard place" better than any woman ever born. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy". She's got two men: her husband, who's easing out the back door; and her best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl who's stuck deep in the country. To top it off, she has two families: the Fretts, who stole her and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who lost her and can't forget that they've been done wrong.

In Between, Georgia, population 90, a feud that began the night Nonny was born is escalating, and a random act of violence will set the torch to a 30-year-old stash of highly flammable secrets. This might be just what the town needs, if only Nonny wasn't sitting in the middle of it.

"Plenty of Southern sass and rueful, charming confidences make this a theatrical and well-paced Southern family drama." (Publishers Weekly)
"Quirky and touching....A climactic ending with perfect story resolution makes this book tidy and uplifting." (Booklist)

Great listen!

I don't usually like books narrated in a southern accent, but I can't imagine this book being read by anyone other than the author. I looked forward to every time I had a chance to listen and didn't want the book to end. The characters were quirky, and not all likeable, but always interesting. Flawed yet somehow loveable. The story line had enough twists to keep it interesting. I hate to go to the gym and only go so I can listen to a book; this one got me there more often than any other in a long, long time!

Great story teller

What a terrific story, and so well read by the author - a rarity in audio books. I loved the characters and their individual voices. I was especially charmed by the author's voice for the little 5 year old - young without being babyish. This is the second book I've listened to by this author, and I've loved both. Time to find the next.

Between, Georgia

Enjoyable storyline with family connections and love interests. I would classify this as a good "Chick Flick". Good to listen to or read on vacation or in the car. Glad I purchased it.

Wonderful!

I really liked this one, as much or more than "gods in Alabama". As the previous reviewer, I really think this without genre. I definitely don't think it should be listed as chick lit. Wonderful narration. Great throughout, very colorful characters, more color would burn my eyes. I grew up in SC and knew people or am related to people much like the ones in the book. If you buy it you'll love it. This is a little out of my usual genre of reading (check my other reviews) but this lady is amazing.

A decent effort

Joshilyn Jackson's debut novel, "Gods in Alabama", is a stunning work which transcends genre (it is in turns mystery, skilled comedy, family history and rich slice of southern life) and deserves to be called "literature". This follow-up book is not so finely honed, and while well-written and beautifully-read, it belongs strictly in the category of "chick lit". While a very fine example of the genre, it wouldn't have held my interest on paper for very long. Ms. Jackson's pleasant, down-home voice and skillful characterizations make for a fun listen, but after purchasing almost a dozen copies of "Gods" in hardcover and sending them to everyone I know, I will be keeping "Between" all to myself.

Not worth your time or credits

I think this may be an earlier book by JJackson because it was not even close to her other books in any way. The characters were interesting but the story was flat. Even Ms. Jackson's amazing narration which, truthfully, I could probably enjoy listening to her read the dictionary, didnt save it. I recommend, A Grown Up Kind of Pretty, my favorite.

Well crafted, engrossing story

If you liked "Gods in Alabama" you'll love "Between, Georgia". Once again, the characters are so well developed, you really feel you know them. The story is engrossing and the humor is sharp and thoroughly enjoyable. The author does a superb job narrating (her voice for the character of Bernice is reminiscent of Vicki Lawrence doing Momma on Carol Burnett!). The story will draw you in right from the start and, like all good books, you'll hate when it finally draws to its satisfying close. Two thumbs up! I anxiously await the next yarn from this talented author.

Oh, Georgia...

Any additional comments?

Growing up in Loganville, Georgia and having lived in Alaska for going on 3 years now, I can't help but grin from ear to ear feeling just a little bit like this author took me back there. Sure, I want to be disgruntled about the stereotypical characteristics the Between inhabitants exhibit, but I just can't. I've got family and friends sprinkled throughout the Loganville-Between-Athens areas, and some of them have been known to act a little bit like these people... in the best ways, of course. Some of the details Jackson captured put a smile in my heart like the way everybody down there looks after family be it brawling or taking on a child that needs some extra loving. I'm so glad I read this. Her writing style makes me feel right at home.

A little dull for Joshilyn Jackson

I wanted more of this author after listening to "A Grown Up Kind of Pretty. For whatever reason "Between" was the last one chosen. As one of her earlier books it's too bad I didn't get it first. Then they would have just kept getting better. I was a little bored with this one. There just wasn't the mystery and suspense I found in the others but I guess it wasn't intended to be that kind of book. It's always great to hear this author narrate. Love her voice and the way she reads. I'll go back and listen to "A Grown Up Kind of Pretty" and "God's in Alabama" over and over but I doubt I'll hear this one again.
