Under Enemy Colors

Captivating story. For the boater in me, the story is historically accurate. The realities of war and service in the King's Navy are portrayed well. The characterizations by the narrator help to bring the story to life.

I love the genre and this one is good fun. Not C.S. Forester, but then who is? A bit formulaic but well written with some interesting characters. All in all a good listen.

This is a wonderful book and expertly narrated. As a long-time nautical fiction fan, I was pleasantly surprised how well written and narrated it was. The characters are fully developed, events based on truth and not a lagging moment in the entire book. This would be a great starter NF book as it is so clearly written and with a minimum of sailing jargon. Will look forward to this author's next installment of this Hayden series. Can't miss download !

This is an excellent book and an excellent audio book. The story is right up there with the Hornblower novels. The narrator is very good with the voices and the nautical terms. A very enjoyable first adventure.

Started a bit slow but becomes a very captivating story. The narration was great.

The author, who writes as S. Thomas Russell in this, the first of a series about a British ship's captain during the Napoleanic War, is an experienced fantasy author as Sean Russell. The characters are well-developed, believable and show depth and humanity. The battles compare favorably with C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series. I am eagerly awaiting his next in the series.

It is really nice to download a book and think you got a deal for your credit. This book is action packed and fast moving. I really got interested therefore I got no sleep. I listened to the 15 hours in one sitting. The book itself is kind of a combination Horatio Hornblower and Caine mutiny. In my opinion it is as good as either and should be made into a movie. I did not like any of the Captain and Commander series and was bored with them but this is better. I recommend it to anyone who likes action/adventure.

I was suspicious of all these five star reviews, but bought the book anyhow. Everyone was correct. This is a top notch story of the genre, made even better because of minimal use of square rigging terminology. The tension is not between the protagonist and the enemy, but among the protagonist, captain, crew, and the system. Much more interesting and realistic. The reader is a man of many voices and is one of my favorites. I can see more coming.

Through the first few chapters it was a fairly good book, but then as they take to the sea it turned into a book that I couldn't stop listening to, Lost a night just hanging on each new adventure. This is a great book for historical fiction listeners. Can't wait for the next in the series.

I have read Hornblower, Kent and O'Brien, and now we have Russell. A very good story, which makes you hungry for the next in what we hope will be a long series of new exciting stories to equal "Under Enemy Colors".
