In The Kingmaker's Daughter, number-one New York Times best-selling author Philippa Gregory presents the riveting story of Anne Neville, her sister Isabel, and their ever-changing fortunes.
The Kingmaker's Daughter is the gripping and ultimately tragic story of the daughters of the man known as the "Kingmaker", the most powerful magnate in England through the Cousins' Wars. In the absence of a son and heir, he uses the two girls as pawns in his political games, but they grow up to be influential players in their own right. In this novel, her first sister story since The Other Boleyn Girl, Gregory explores the lives of two fascinating young women.
At the court of Edward IV and his beautiful queen, Elizabeth Woodville, Anne grows from a delightful child brought up in intimacy and friendship with the family of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, to become ever more fearful and desperate when her father makes war on his former friends. Her will is tested when she is left widowed and fatherless, with her mother in sanctuary and her sister married to the enemy. Fortune's wheel turns again when Richard rescues Anne from her sister's house, with danger still following Anne, even as she eventually ascends to the throne as queen. Having lost those closest to her, she must protect herself and her precious only child, Prince Edward, from a court full of royal rivals.

"The bonds of sisterhood infuse Gregory’s latest. . . . The stakes are high as Anne and Isabel Neville, daughters of the earl of Warwick ("The Kingmaker"), vie for their father's favor and a chance at the throne.... In addition to Gregory handling a complicated history, she convincingly details women's lives in the 1400s and the competitive love between sisters." (Publishers Weekly)
"Gregory delivers another vivid and satisfying novel of court intrigue, revenge, and superstition. Gregory's many fans as well as readers who enjoy lush, evocative writing, vividly drawn characters, and fascinating history told from a woman's point of view will love her latest work." (Library Journal
"Conspiracy and a fight to the death for love and power." (Los Angeles Times)
Audio Books make people better drivers! I’m never in a hurry to get where I need to go because I would rather be in Tudor England, listening to a good historical fictional novel. Or I could be somewhere far away with dragons and magic, listening to fantasy. When that is too much drama, I love keeping up with fashion and girl talk with one of my favorite “chick lit” novels.
"Marvelous Story Maker"
The thing about Philippa Gregory’s books is you can always read them again! I find my self cross referencing her other books in this series.
It’s amazing how you read one of the books in the series, and you are completely behind the main character. Then you read another and you change your mind completely. I think now that I have read all three, I need to read them again to decide which character is really my favorite.
My favorite scene was when Anne and Isabelle made up after fighting for so long. I think it was a perfect scene to show how sisters can have so much hate and envy towards each other, but sisterly love is forever. However, the most intense scene was when Isabelle went into labor on the ship. It was so intense and powerful. The scene set the tone for the events that followed.

"Historically incorrect"
This book is historically incorrect on many fronts but the most obvious is to suggest Anne Neville wife of Richard III was in any way instrumental in bringing about the disappearance or death of Edward V and Richard Duke of York - whether you believe their deaths were due to Richard III or not is one thing to suggest Anne had anything to do with it is to deny all historical knowledge and evidence. According to chroniclers of the time Robert Brackenbury was under strict orders from the king that anything to do with the Princes could only have been done on receipt of a royal warrant from King Richard himself to suggest he took it on himself at a mere suggestion from Anne is to defame the man's character.
Also Ms Gregory really needs to decide if she is writing an historical novel or a fantasy piece as it is doubtful any person interested in this period of history today would believe Elizabeth Wydville capable of witchcraft.
Furthermore the book is badly written the same points are made again and again and again it is repetitive and tedious in the extreme. There are several instances of use of the present day vernacular which strikes a discordant note in the narrative. I would suggest this book was written to appeal to a young audience who would not know or care about historical detail.
All in all I would not recommend this book.
"Too Long!"
I love the history but this one went on way too long. I understand shaping and building characters but it got to the point I did not care what Ann had to say.
I enjoyed the other books I listened to but this one dragged.
Women voices were Ok but the men left a little to be desired.
No
"LOVE IT!"
I'm still listening. Nearly finished. I listen only when I'm walking and this story and the narrator are so riveting that I find myself standing still, in place, with my hand over my mouth. At some points I have been afraid to go on fearing what may have befallen Anne. Just sooo good!
all of them. She does such masterful job of distinguishing characters. I know who is speaking immediately and it's so subtle. Such a joy to listen t, storytelling is fabulous with her as the reader.
I don't want ti to end. There are too many plauisible, probable and some quite sad endings that could be. Suspense!!!!!
"Another great book by philippa gregory!"
The narrator was superb and the story was fascinating that I could not stop listening to it
When anne went to court at the christmas festives. I think it was one of the happiest times of her life.
Bianca Amato did an excellent job in giving each character distinct accents and different voice tones. Her performance was impeccable. I really enjoyed listening to her.
The Nevilles, maybe......

"Another great piece of historical fiction"
If you have been following the Cousin's War series, you will certainly want to read this. I love getting all the different perspectives from different players. Fascinating.
The escape at sea where Isabella went into labor.
"good story made tedious"
Ffinally gave up, it was too dragged out both in the writing and the delivery.
There are many great parts of this story. This is basically the Richard III story but told about the women instead of the men. It had great possibilities.
Pretentious and dragged out.
All these women who part of the story of the Tudor rise to the throne are so interesting. But so far I have been disappointed in the books. The reading makes the characters seem so weak and whiny.
Very disappointed.
"Philippa Gregory tells a great story"
The story is told from the perspective of the daughter. She makes assumptions without knowing all the facts which gives her impressions of those around her. Her eyes are then opened as the story unfolds and she learns the truth. So many emotions in this story makes this book quite a roller coaster of feelings to read/listen to. Rarely was there a dull moment.
"Very enjoyable historical fiction"
This was my first book by this author, don't know how I missed her. I have since purchased all her books on good reads and cannot wait to listen to all of them.
