"Austin capably weaves her intertwined threads and creates believable characters in conflict with themselves and with each other." (Historical Novels Review)
"Enchanting"
This is a wonderful story that helps bring previously boring biblical characters to adventurous life. This book had me dusting off my Bible to check up on the validity of Lynn's biblical/historical accounts - I was able to verify the key events in her capitivating story. I learned a great deal of Biblical history and was blessed by her presentation of Godly truth. It is a delight having entertainment provide valuable education. A true treasure!!
"completely spellbinding"
the author has done so much research on the subject of the kings and the prophets and it was so enlightening to me to understand how God worked among His people and led them according to their obedience to Him. i highly recommend this book - it is a real page turner - one of the best books I have read in a long, long time.
"Excellent"
What a phenomenal book. I felt as though I was there while the story was being told. This gave it so much more context and visualization than just reading the bible alone. The reader did an outstanding job and lends her voice well to a multitude of characters. Very well worth the read.
"Entertaining"
A good book, good story. It certainly makes one think about way God works, even if most of it is fiction.
I would have liked to rate the quality of the reader or sound. You hear too often the reader gulping.taking a breathe throughout the book. This was distracting.
I like Jack Reacher style characters regardless of setting. Put them in outer space, in modern America, in a military setting, on an alien planet... no worries. Book has non moralistic vigilante-justice? Sign me up! (oh, I read urban fantasy, soft and hard sci-fi, trashy vampire and zombie novels too)
"Wow, a suspenseful Bible story..."
I tried to explain the subject matter of this book to someone and the closest I could come is that it's a creative fictionalization of the Biblical story of Manessah (and, to some extent, his father and Joshua). Since Kings doesn't have much detail on Manessah's life (there are only a few verses about him after all), you know there's a lot of creative liberty taken, but it's actually surprisingly suspenseful. The events unfold as one would imagine they would.
I think one of the most enjoyable parts is that it wasn't really predictable. Well, ultimately we know what happens, but within the story we never know. Unlike "regular" fiction where the main character always "wins" or at least survives, we don't know that from the start of this story. God might be merciful but that doesn't mean that his people necessarily survive their "tests".
If one wanted to learn more about Biblical history, this would be an excellent way to do that since there are Biblical references/verses threaded throughout. The narration is excellent.
"This whole series was "WOW.""
I enjoyed this series so. I know it was fiction but it provided so much information that helped to make the story come to life. The character development, the voice, intrigue, and Christian content from the standpoint of the Old Testament went a long way to make this series rewarding. I have told others about it and encouraged them to read. Such benefit! It is really high on my list of favorite books.
I have not read any book that compared to this one for what the story provided in its relationship to scripture.
If there was anything wrong I couldn't tell because I was wrapped from the beginning in the story.
Would not rename.
"Brilliant!!! Great Narrator!!!"
I think the author is brilliant to be able to create such in depth characters and storylines and then intertwine them with historical events. Zira's character was brilliant at twisting the truth. On the other hand, the righteous had such strength of character and conviction...truly inspiring. The narrator is excellent with her voices. It's a very exciting story. I started on this book (#4 in the series) and am anxious to start from the beginning.
"Well written"
I enjoyed this book and the narrator did a nice job with the reading of the book. I would work out extra just to keep listening to it.
"A encouraging look into Biblical history"
I really enjoyed my time listening to this book. This was my first time with this author and narrator. It was easy to enjoy while doing my housework. I will get some more books to listen to. Thanks for offering to us!
"All right but not my cup of tea"
The story was interesting enough. I am not familiar with the book of Kings so I found it interesting to hear about the characters. I am more attracted to complex characters and I felt these were a little flat and two-dimensional. I didn't like the lack of time between the ending of one chapter and the beginning of thye next. Same with scene changes. I was a little startled by the abruptness a couple of times.
