Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

"Carriger debuts brilliantly with a blend of Victorian romance, screwball comedy of manners and alternate history....This intoxicatingly witty parody will appeal to a wide cross-section of romance, fantasy and steampunk fans." (Publishers Weekly)
"Amelia Peabody has competition"
Followers of Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody will fall in love with Miss Tarabotti. She's wonderfully sensible and completely witty in this alternate Victorian London. It's not that Ms. Carriger manages to meld elements from Jane Austin, Jules Verne and Bram Stoker, it's that she does it so extrordinarily well while crafting her own uniquely memorable tale. I can't wait for the others in this series to come out on tape - I'm headed for the bookstore now!
Like all of you, I love to read, but I am time-limited. Audible allows me to keep up with all my favorite authors. I am currently listening to 'Cold Days' by Jim Butcher.
"Brilliant!"
Gail Carriger's debut of the parasol protectorate is just plain brilliant. Set in an alternative Victorian England where werewolves, vampires, and ghosts are productive members of society, Soulless takes the listener on a witty and eccentric mystery ride. While we enjoy a satiric portrayal of social graces in the spirit of Jane Austin, we are entertained by fantastical science in the spirit of Jules Verne. Emily Gray is an excellent choice in narrators for this farce fusion. You will like this book. I can't wait for the other books in this series to make it to Audible.
"Delightfully dry!"
I very much enjoyed both reading this book - and later listeniing to the performance in the audibook. The author has a wonderful dry wit! And the narration is on-target. I very much hope the next books in the series are available soon.
"Excellent."
I usually don't think that listening to a book can be better than reading it, but in this case I think it might have been. The narrator was absolutely perfect, her accents and tone really brought the already excellent book to life.
The prose in this book was truly excellent, I almost got myself in trouble at the office because I kept laughing out loud. The story is compelling and the world is truly interesting. I am looking forward to more of the series!
"A bit of Everything"
A wonderful mix of sci-fi, mystery and romance. I cannot wait for the second to be done in audio, even the narrator was amazing.
"Fantastic!"
Absolutely fabulous! Gail Carriger is in danger of becoming my favorite author. "Soulless" was funny, romantic, and exciting. Great if you like science fiction, romance, or steam punk. In addition, the narrator was excellent. The best I've ever heard. This book was worth every penny!
"Can not say enough about this series..."
My friends at Murder By the Book recommended this series... I went ahead and got it and could not have been more pleased so I had to get the audible version too...The narrator was perfect. I can not wait for the next book to be available on here. It's now our book of the month for July on my blog. Highly recommend!!!
"A lot of fun"
This book is sort of a two-for-one deal for me. I love both regency and paranormal books and I thought the book blends both worlds very well. If you have a taste for bookish/strong minded/spinster(you get the idea) main character paired with a strong male lead, you might like to try this book. I had a good chuckle here and there and generally had a good time listening to it. I hope audible publishes the second book soon.
"What a fun story.....I want more"
Alexia Tarabotti so ahead of her time.........I enjoyed every moment of this story I hope there will be more.
"Loved This!!! What a different spin on paranormal"
Lots of wit, neat spin on the paranormal, paid for this book and did not use a credit, it is sooooo worth it. There are 2 more according to amazon I guess I will have to read those instead of listening, but I would listen to them when available, this is definitely something to hear more than one time. Just loved it, giggled out loud at many parts. What a hoot. Not like any other Vamp, Wolf book ever read or listenend to. Have a sense of humor when you get this one, so worth it.
