"Much better than those ratings indicate."
This is typical Thompson. That is to say: it's dark, it has tempting babes, it has a straight forward plot that flips every time the listener gets comfortable. There has been discussion of the ending, but remember: this is about a crazy person!
The narration is suited to the story, his voices are perfect for the characters, and the pace is noir creepy. This is a fun listening experience.12 of 13 people found this review helpful -

"Twisted"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?Not "well-spent" but perhaps "not begrudged". I'm not a fan of the 1950s crime noir with its bleak, cynical writing and cheap women, but Thompson was certainly an over-the-top writer and I was never quite sure where the story would go next. The narrator did a nice job; in lesser-skilled hands (or voice), the story may have been just too off the wall.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jim Thompson? Why or why not?No, one of his books is enough.
Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?It has to be deputy sheriff Lou Ford: a sadomasochistic sociopath who feels no remorse for anything he does, who gets castrated by his father and pumps himself full of hormones so he can still perform brutal sex acts, a cold-blooded deviant and double-crosser who most people in town believe is a good citizen of the community, and yet someone who I just couldn't quite completely dislike. I even found myself horrified a few times when I laughed out loud at his sick sense of humor.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?No; reading about it was enough.

What made the experience of listening to The Killer Inside Me the most enjoyable?The way the characters are so completely different and vivid. As if each were product of the imagination of a different author.

"Not bad! Not great..."
Was The Killer Inside Me worth the listening time?Worth a listen if you get it on sale. Interesting story told from the killers point of view. Just don't expect miracles from this book.

I like mystery and thriller novels, particularly good serial killer novels. I'm a writer and a psychotherapist.

"Pretty Good"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?It took a bit of listening to get into but it turned out to be a pretty good listen, didn't want to stop until the end.

"Excellent narration. O.K. book."
Is there anything you would change about this book?Not that I can think of.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jim Thompson? Why or why not?Probably not. I found the story a bit tedious.
What does Kevin T. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?He brings a great variety of voices and insight into the various players.
Could you see The Killer Inside Me being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?Not now. I can only see Robert Mitchum playing the lead character.
Any additional comments?This book just was not a great listen for me. I did finish it as I kept hoping I could get into it more.

"What is it???"
What disappointed you about The Killer Inside Me?Everything but the narrator. More specifically the main character. If this book is what people consider disturbing then they have not read the likes of Stephen King.

Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?How about my least favorite - don't get me wrong, the narrarator was great but he made the women sound nagging and annoying.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?Disappointment.
Any additional comments?I just don't know what others saw that was so great about the book. The best part was the fact that the book was from the viewpoint of the killer, but even that was dull. Don't bother is my best advice.
