The Danger Point: Miss Silver Mysteries, Book 4

Patricia Wentworth was a contemporary of Agatha Christie but in fact, wrote her first successful mystery novels a few years before Christie published her first Miss Marple books. There are striking similarities in the two protagonists and if you love Miss Marple, you will no doubt love Miss Silver as well. Diana Bishop, as usual, does an outstanding job with the narration. I am a great fan of the "cozy" British mystery and find all of Patricia Wentworth's books to be great fun. I am thrilled that Audible is adding more of them all the time.

I love Patricia Wentworth's classic British mysteries in the style of Agatha Christie, but the heroine in this story is beyond the degree of drippy, chin-trembling, knee-knocking weakness that this listener can stomach. I actually was rooting for her to get killed. As I say in most of my Wentworth reviews, if you are an addict of classic golden age British cozies, there will come a day when you have listened twice over to all the Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christies, and Ngaio Marshes. Then you will listen two or three times over to Wentworth's best: the longer, more elegant and imaginative and suspenseful stories such as The Watersplash. THEN will come the day when you will start listening your way through Wentworth's lesser cannon. And you'll mostly enjoy it, you might even enjoy this one, just don't be surprised if you root for the killer.

Danger Point is an cozy murder mystery set in 1939, and begins when a young wife overhears disturbing gossip about her husband and his first wife. Miss Silver makes few appearances, I found myself wanting to read more about her! The story itself was entertaining; however the heroine was often listless and had such poor self-esteem that most of my motivation to finish was to learn how she would fair off.
