Publisher's Summary

They were just kids when they stumbled upon the horror of their hometown. Now, as adults, none of them can withstand the force that has drawn them all back to Derry, Maine, to face the nightmare without end, and the evil without a name.

©1987 Stephen King (P)2010 Penguin

What the Critics Say

"The amazingly prolific King returns to pure horror, pitting good against evil as in The Stand and The Shining. Moving back and forth between 1958 and 1985, the story tells of seven children in a small Maine town who discover the source of a series of horrifying murders. Having conquered the evil force once, they are summoned together 27 years later when the cycle begins again. As usual, the requisite thrills are in abundance." (Library Journal)

    "Best Narrator Possible!"

Bravo to the two Stephens, King and Weber. Stephen Weber is, in my mind, now the official "Voice of King".
Despite my ongoing love affair with Stephen King's writings, I have never been a big fan of his audio books because the narration has always been a bit off. Even when King reads his own stuff, it's obviously a reader reading.
But Weber is simply fantastic narrating "It"! He doesn't so much read the text as he tells the story ... I feel like we're all sitting around a camp fire and he's telling this really engrossing (albeit long!) ghost story that more than succeeds in scaring us all to quivering lumps of jelly!
Now if he would just sit down with a copy of "The Stand", and let us hear it the way we have always read it for ourselves ... clasping the covers in a death grip, turning each page with trepidation, and getting to know the intimate workings of terrific cast of characters in an out-of-this-world world.

"Rich detailed world, deep, compelling characters"

One of Stephen King's longest novels (a mere 26 pages shorter than the uncut version of The Stand), "IT", is a prime example of what makes King a great writer. The theme of horror merely serves as a framework for what really matters -- the characters and the town and events that shape their personalities and relationships.

The narrator, Steven Weber, does an excellent job.

With the compelling story and great narration, "IT" will keep you engaged for (literally - at over 44 hours) days.

    "I thought I was desensitized"

I like to think I'm pretty desensitized and can handle whatever an author might throw at me- be it dead babies, savage murders, etc. However, I admit there were a few parts of this book that I had to fastforward a little because it reached something in me I didn't want to face. This book is very long and though the mini-series shows a lot from this book, there are a lot of parts that are new to someone who has never read the book. The narration was terrific. One of the best I've heard. And there were some parts that were a little cheesy, but overall this was Stephen King at his most talented. Some audiobooks you feel like it takes you weeks to get through three hours. However, I blasted through this audiobook over a matter of two weeks with the feeling it had only taken a few hours to listen to. It flows, is touching in many ways, and is very entertaining.

    "Amazing reader"

I read this book in college when it came out. For me it is far and away my favorite of King's novels. But the reader really takes hold of this book by the throat. His energy and passion make listening to this an absolute treat.

    My advice- buy this book.

    "FINALLY!!!!"

I have been waiting for YEARS for them to release IT in audio format. Steven Weber who played Jack Torrence in the mini-series remake of The Shinning does an outstanding job and this will hopefully not be his last narration. I read this book for the first time as a young adult and fell in love with it. The kids knew that there were monsters but MOST the adults didn't believe. I to was a social outcast at school and had and still do have an over active imagination. This really brought the book to life. I was leery of sewer grates and the creek and wooded area by my house for a MONTH after reading this. King is at his supreme best when he has time to wander through a story peek in all the nooks and cranny's and explore the ins an outs. IT will draw you in and hold you to the last word. You will NOT be disappointed in this terrifying jaunt to a little town called Derry. Now if they will release The Stand i will be one happy(well happier) camper!

    "Steven Weber is AWESOME!!!!"

This is a mondo long book - and without someone like Steven Weber to breathe life into the characters and really commit to the story - I don't know if it would have translated into audio form. This gets 5 stars just for the way Steven Weber read it - much less the incredible story.

    "The best."

I read this book for the first time when I was thirteen. I wondered whether I would enjoy it as much now that I'm an adult and listened to this audiobook to see. The performance actually adds to the story, which I think is usually not the case with audiobooks. Perfect.

    "Audio Book Done Right"

Many of King's audio books have been plagued by annoying and grating mood music, and at time poor narration. This is not the case for It.

Steven Weber does a fantastic job. So good, I might look for books he narrates even if the author is unknown to me.

The presentation is also clean and free from added music. If you have avoided King's books in the past due to a bad experience with this on a previous one, don't avoid this one.

As for the story itself (odd how the production has often taken the focus on these books, eh?), it is now one of my favorite King books. I found it more chilling than The Shining, and I was always anxious to get back into the car to hear more. Typically, I'll put the audio books on for just my commute, but I'd put It on for 10 minute trips to Home Depot.

Good book, good production. More than worth the monthly credit.

    "Excellent book"

I've read this book many times and have the movie DVD. Have always loved it, and I think Mr. Weber does a great job telling the story, especially with Richie Tozier's accents!
