"[The Feminine Mystique] now feels both revolutionary and utterly contemporary....Four decades later, millions of individual transformations later, there is still so much to learn from this book....Those who think of it as solely a feminist manifesto ought to revisit its pages to get a sense of the magnitude of the research and reporting Friedan undertook." (Anna Quindlen)
"One of those rare books we are endowed with only once in several decades." (Amitai Etzioni)
"If you want to understand what has happened to American women over the last half-century, their extraordinary journey from Doris Day to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and beyond, you have to start with this book." (Gail Collins, The New York Times Magazine)
"An important book ruined by the narration."
The monotonous and often mispronounced delivery by Parker Posey makes it extremely difficult to listen to this incredibly important book. Surely someone better could have been found.
"Get this book"
I don't read print versions, much prefer audiobooks.
Perhaps this could compare to Rachel Carsons "Silent Spring". It sheds light on an interesting topic that is as relevant today as it was when the book was written. I don't think the author realised how "ground breaking" her book was at the time.
Both of these books were ahead of their time & yet Betty Friedan really struck a chord with females - and males - of her time.
It's non-fiction, no characters.
Quite a few parts. When she starts getting a lot of "me too"s from women who are going nuts trying to do "housewife" while their brain is screaming at them to do something "real".
This is well worth the read. It's easy to listen to but she covers so many areas so well. It pre-dates the feminist movement so her work is uninfluenced by other writers of the genre but it fits so closely what we still experience these days. Even having got a degree, even a post graduate qualification females will often experience the difficulty of having a career (not just a "job") vs being a partner, mother & carer.
What do you do? & Do you have children? Are the first 2 questions I'm often asked by strangers.
This book just makes sense of so many things.
Get it. You will enjoy it.
