Publisher's Summary

No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city - not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband Roarke at her disposal - but the Swisher case has her baffled. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used night vision to find their way through the cozy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen...

Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan - and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas' strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, and Dallas needs to solve this case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories - and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back - and with Roarke providing the kind of help only he can give - Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who's behind them.

Crack another case with Eve Dallas.

    "In Tears"

This was a really good one. I couldn't put it down, so to speak. But it really is a tear jerker. I found myself crying often for the young girl who survived and the others that did not. One of my favorites in in this series.

    "Rocks!"

I think this is one of my favorites from the In Death Series. I really like Norah Roberts and when I read everything possible by Norah Roberts I decided to try JD Robb because I am huge fan of her other books. I had never listened to audio-books but these are highly addicting. Susan Ericksen does a really entertaining job with the narrating. I tried to read one of these books and stopped after 2 chapters to go fine the audio-book so I could get the feeling back in the characters. I think Lieutenant Dallas, Eve is absolutely wonderful and who wouldn't love sexy Roarke. The picture I have in my head when Roberts describe him sizzles, especially with there chemistry. I can't wait till October for the next one to be available. I sometimes wish Peabody didn't sound so weird but I guess you can only do so many female voices. I think this whole series rocks.

"J D Robb gives us a Gem of a story."
What made the experience of listening to Survivor in Death the most enjoyable?

The Inclusion of a young child as a main character made this really enjoyable. Eve is always so hesitant in her dealings with children, so to have a plot where Eve and Roarke are in such close proximity to this character is brilliant.

What other book might you compare Survivor in Death to and why?

I don't like comparing books with others, each is separate from the other.
To make an attempt at similar types, though, perhaps Tami Hoag books could be of similar type. Readers could also try Kate Kingsbury, Ann Charles, Elizabeth Lowell is another favourite and there are others to be found.

Also it might be pertinent to write that J D Robb is actually Nora Roberts (for those who don't know) and Nora has written some really good mysteries under her own name, i.e., Angels Fall, Sanctuary, Hot Rocks and others. These are good reading as well. Don't know if they are all available as audio but some are.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

Nixie Swisher the little girl who plays such a large part in the novel. I think she was performed really well and drawn as a character really well, too.

    "good mystery, unrealistic relationships"

The mysteries in all these stories (I've listened to five) are first rate, the problem lies in the unrealistic relationship between Eve and Roarke, and the stupid sex scenes. These make the stories hokey. No one would put up with Eve, particularly not the richest, best looking and devoted male. She frequently acts like a child, and please spare me the excuse of her background, but he is so patient and thinks so highly of her, he puts up with everything.

I'm not prude but I don't care about their sex - I don't want it in a mystery - just allude to it. The mysteries stand on their own merit...

I am a retired Court Reporter and I LOVE books. All kinds of books but my favorites are mysteries and period books. I like civil war books and some biographies.

"This one grabs hold of you & won't let go!"
Would you listen to Survivor in Death again? Why?

Yes I will at some stage.. I am sure I will listen to most if not all of this series again.. The characters have become like family to me and the action is compelling!

What did you like best about this story?

This addition to the series was one of the best so far ( I'm up to book 28). It was the depth of the crime, the impact it had on the little girl nixie and most of all the way she affected Eve, Roarke and Somerset. I love the fact that we got to see more of Eve and Roarke's true feelings and hidden wounds. There were also some really humorous moments as they floundered with the concept of looking after a child, not to mention some really deep, painful and poignant emotional moments for them all. This one is a winner but of course you need to read at the very least books 1 to 4 to form an understanding and bond with the people in the series. Also, the narrator is in the top two of the many I have heard. . I cannot fathom how she consistently pulls off so many different voices! It really is like listening to a cast of actors. . The men actually sound like men, Roarke's Irish accent makes me melt.. and the other characters both male and female all sound unique. Amazing..

    Which scene was your favorite?

I cant recall off the top of my head as I am about 8 books further along in the series now..

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did both at various points in the book.. it really pulled at all types of feelings.

    Any additional comments?

This is the first book/series that I have reviewed yet I have read and listened to over 200 books in the last year alone. . Ive enjoyed most of them and I have enjoyed many kinds of series in diverse genres, yet I have to say that this series is one of the best. Go get book one and be drawn into the drama, grit and heart of the 'in death' world.

    "Dallas Survives Again"
What made the experience of listening to Survivor in Death the most enjoyable?

As always the narration. It is back to its outstanding form.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not quite but the plot was intriguing.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All the In Death series have been great with only a few exceptions.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Quite a few the scenes between Dallas and Nixie and also between Dallas and Somerset regarding Nixie were particularly moving as only Dallas can make them.

"J. D. Robb rocks on Audible!"
What did you love best about Survivor in Death?

The author never fails to deliver. J.D. consistently provides a story that I enjoy from beginning to end and remember long after the novel is finished. Her characters are memorable and realistic and the plot is never without twists and turns for both Eva and Roark to complete the wonderful experience. Thanks yet again, J. D.

    "Survivor"

I love all of the books in the "In Death" series. This books has to be one of the best stories, Dallas is called on to a crime scene where a whole family is killed with military precision. Then Dallas thinks there is something out of place, who called in the crime scene. Then why is there two backpacks and two pairs of shoe in the little girls bedroom. So she looks closer she notes that the shoes are two different sizes. There is one child that is missing. Dallas and her team must find out why someone wanted to kill a whole family, at the same time keep Nixie safe.
This story made me cry, the character of Nixie makes the whole story. She is able to put Dallas on edge, because she does not know what to do with children. But Nixie wants to be with Dallas, she feels safe with her. But Dallas is not the only one Nixie has become attached too. The whole of Dallas team has fallen in love with Nixie, even Summerset is taken with her.
J.D. Robb has a way of writing stories that put all the characters in it, in to problems that they are not use to. Making on going character building, along with the love story that is woven in to the story line. This book might be over 12 hours of listening time but you will not want to stop.
