Publisher's Summary

A dark and edgy romance that will appeal to fans of erotic and turbulent relationships....

In the near future, the Krinar rule the Earth. An advanced race from another galaxy, they are still a mystery to us - and we are completely at their mercy.

Shy and innocent, Mia Stalis is a college student in New York City who has led a very normal life. Like most people, she's never had any interactions with the invaders - until one fateful day in the park changes everything. Having caught Korum's eye, she must now contend with a powerful, dangerously seductive Krinar who wants to possess her and will stop at nothing to make her his own.

How far would you go to regain your freedom? How much would you sacrifice to help your people? What choice will you make when you begin to fall for your enemy?

WARNING: This book contains strong sexual content and explicit language and is not suitable for listeners under 18.

"I Enjoyed This One Very Much!"

A very interesting twist on "War of the Worlds." I found Korum to be a fascinating character and Mia to truly be naïve. Because Mia is so inexperienced, she does not think to ask questions that she should and it could have cost her a great deal. This story also shows what can go wrong when your "Allies" don't give you the whole truth about things.

There are many things that were left unexplained in this book, but that give me a reason to look forward to the next in this series. I do hope that Anna Zaires continues with Korum and Mia's story and more about the Krinar.

"I can't believe how much I enjoyed the book"

I don't usually like books without answers, the ending or arrogant/disrespectful male characters... But this book not only kept my undivided attention, but I also listened to it twice in a row. As of right now, this author is on auto download for me. I really hope the same narrator will continue with the series. I will look for other books narrated by Kathleen Godwin, she did an excellent job. I really think this book should be included in erotica section.

I've always been a avid reader so now I'm a avid listener. I prefer the paranormal genre but I do like to switch things up. It's boring if you don't have variety. Of course I do love the romance and the hotter the better. Also, you can't beat a good thriller filled with suspense and a ending you can't even guess at until the very end.

    "HOPING FOR MORE"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes. I almost gave up within the first couple of chapters but decided to hang in to see what the hype was about (both good and bad). Even though I was disappointed in a few aspects I thought the storyline was unique and wanted to find out more.

Would you be willing to try another book from Anna Zaires? Why or why not?

I would be willing to try the second installment of this series written by Ms. AZ only to find out if it gets better after the first book.

What three words best describe Kathleen Godwin’s voice?

    Voices all same.

Did Close Liaisons inspire you to do anything?

    Nope

    Any additional comments?

I felt that Ms. Godwin was sincerely trying hard to do a good job with the voices but just fell really short especially those times when, I'm sure, Korum was speaking in a sexy, smoky voice and when there was any other exclamations or inflections needed.

"Sexy alien sex! (but bad reader -- sigh.)"

I had just finished my 2nd reading of "the Host," and was looking for another alien-type book, when I found this on Amazon. I read it and it was promising, but then I read the 2nd book in the series and that was great! In fact, book 2 makes book 1 even better! So when I saw the first one here on Audible, I bought it with the discount.

Unfortunately, the reader is awful - she sounds like she's reading to 3rd graders. And her voice is too old for the main character, so as a listen, it was a disappointment. (It was so much sexier in my mind, and kind of BDSM sinister, which didn't come across in the audio version at all.)

I recommend reading this series instead, especially since book 2 is available at Amazon now, and you can always buy the Audible version at a discount later.

    "50 Shades of Alien"

I don't mind books that have over the top sexual content. In fact, I quite enjoy them in most cases. However, I didn't care for 50 Shades of Grey because of the inequality of the hero and heroine in the relationship. Quite frankly, the relationship (not the sex) was rather creepy. Even more, I seriously dislike the copycat books that are coming out in droves (an author friend tells me it's what editors are demanding). Close Liaisons, unfortunately for me, is one of those books.

So if you liked 50 Shades of Grey, and don't mind hearing the same story told again with a few substitutions, you will like this book. If you didn't like 50 Shades and the subsequent copycats, you won't like it. I didn't particularly like either book, and I'm writing this review from that viewpoint. I don't intend to insult any of the legion of FSoG fans, but I do think that readers considering purchasing this book should know up front what they are getting. I didn't, and I regret it, but if you liked FSoG, (and millions did!) then what I say shouldn't hurt the sales of this book at all.

Mia is an innocent college student with a quirky roommate. Korum is an older, experienced alien who happens to see her, becomes obsessed with her and sets about tracking her down and seducing her. She consults her roommate, who comes up with a hair-brained idea or two. Eventually she caves to Korum's allure, but argues with herself as to why she is doing so. Sound familiar?

Another irritant was that I got lessons on how it is much better to leave meat out of your diet, and each time anyone has a meal, you get an in-depth description and on all the wonderful vegetable dishes they are consuming. Early on I got the feeling I was having an agenda pushed on me. Rarely have I read a book that discusses so thoroughly everything they put in their mouths. It all came off as being rather condescending to us mere mortal carnivores.

On a positive note, I thought the author did a rather good job with her world building, and from a devoted paranormal reader, that's no small thing. I loved her explanation of the aliens, how they came to be here and why. It was inspired. If the author ever tries to write something that is not intended to ride on the current FSoG hysteria's coat tails, I might try something she writes again. I have a feeling that she could be a very good paranormal writer if she added more action-adventure to the mix, stayed away from the tried and true FSoG storyline, and restrained herself from preaching an agenda. There are elements in this book that show some very creative and original thought. It's just a shame that the actual plot did not.

The narrator could have been better, but she did a reasonable adequate job with what she had. I would need to listen to her again with some better material to make a real judgement on her abilities.
