Publisher's Summary

After a sad and neglected childhood as an orphan, Jane Eyre was hired by Edward Rochester as governess for his ward. Jane was pleased with the quiet country life at Thornfield, with the beautiful old manor house and gardens, with the book-filled library, and with her own comfortable room.

But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor. The moody Rochester, however, rebuffed her attempts to find out about the woman, and ordered her to keep quiet about strange noises she heard at night.

One night in the garden, Edward Rochester embraced Jane and proposed marriage. But the quiet ceremony in the village church was shockingly halted by a stranger who claimed that Rochester was already married - to the raving maniac Jane had heard crying in the house.

Grief-stricken, Jane left Thornfield, feeling that her life was over before it had really begun. But life had many surprises in store for our heroine, and among them there just might be a happily-ever-after.

"a book that can be heard/read again and again"

One of the best books ever written - everyone should read it. I read the book when I was in my early teens. It was compelling then and I have read it six or seven times since. It continues to be compelling and timeless. I am now in my early 60s and a couple of months ago purchased the audible verion with one of my credits. It is one of the best purchases I ever made. The story is great and the reader is superb. I have listened to it twice since my pruchase. Jane Eyre is one of the best romances ever written - and the author creates one of the most amazing mysteries even included in a book. The author takes the time to create an unforgettable atmosphere and extraordinary characters. Jane, I am so proud of how you turned out as a young lady! Mr. Rochester, where can we find someone like you? It is not a story that could have been quickly told - it is an experience that has to unfold and soak into your senses. This is the type of book I like best because it has exquisite writing, well defined characters, a compelling story and soul wrenching romance/passion without desciptions of gratutious and graphic sex. The passion in this book is too great to trivialize with vulgarity. If you haven't read or listened to Jane Eyre, I envy you because you have something remarkable to look forward to. If you have read it, you really need to hear it - again and again.

I loved Jane Eyre when I read it as a very young woman, and loved listening to it, too. The narrator is excellent.

    "So real, and so touching"

Most people would have tasted love at some point in time, yet I wonder how many were lucky enough to feel and remember it as well as it was in Jane Eyre. Amazingly written, and so is the reading (or the acting, I should say). This book, and its audio recording shall stand the test of time for many more years.

Love the book and would recommend to all book lovers.

    "Brilliant!"

I loved this book when I was 13 years old, and I love it even more now, many years later. It's so beautiful and strange and wonderful, just as I remembered. The reader was perfect, too.

"Why did I wait so long to read this book?"

I didn't realize this story would unfold the way it did and the narrator captures the words perfectly even from female to male passages.

    "Brilliant"

For the first or twenty-third time, Jane Eyre is brilliant and this narrator does a lovely job. No matter how many times I read the novel, watched the films, or now listen to this narration, I still find myself rooting for Jane to have an easy time of it. Overcoming insurmountable odds, she holds steadfast to her dignity, intelligence, and perseveres above all else. One of the most beautiful novels of the Victorian period.

"Initial Impressions of a half-asleep girl."

I am obliged to read Jane Eyre for a literature course at my university. While reading the book the old-fashioned way--that is, with my eyes--wasn't unappealing, the amount of homework required of me this semester has left long commutes my most opportune time for 'study'. Hence audiobooks.

I've only finished a third of the novel, thus far, but... I have to say, I am absolutely in LOVE with Susan Ericksen. There is nothing about her narration that I don't like. I actually find myself disappointed when my hour and a half car-rides are over with. So much so, that I would continue driving in circles... If I could afford the gas, which I can't-- but that's not relevant at the moment. Not to you, I mean. It matters a great deal to me, obviously.

I've digressed (don't be alarmed; it was an intentional digression). My point is while I likely would have enjoyed Jane Eyre absorbed in the traditional sense (me hurting my neck because I've never been able to read anything without crooking my head at awkward angles... And let's face it-- Jane Eyre is long enough that I could paralyze myself permanently.) ...Listening to it read by the wonderful Susan Ericksen makes Bronte all the more rewarding.

By far, the best audio book I have ever heard... (True, this is only my third audio book, but 'Robinson Crusoe' and 'Absalom, Absalom!' do not EVEN begin to compete... On any level.)

    "Wow"

What a wonderful romance and a fantastic narrator. I found myself impatient with the main character several times and would like to have reached out and knocked some sense into her, only to find out she had it right all along. That just proves how the author had me totally involved with the characters in the book. This is a true romantic novel, so if you aren't into that it won't be for you, but if you are this is a must listen to.

"Narrator did for listener what Jane did for Edward"

This was the third classic I have gone back to listen to after having neglected to read while I was in school. I gave Great Expectations 5 out of 5 stars while Robinson Crusoe earned 3 out of 5 stars. Jane Eyre was hovering around 3 stars midway through the listen but the second half of the book made it rise to the top. The narration was superb and readers will understand what my title for this review means when they listen to the book's final 15 minutes. This was a romance novel and probably one of the first chick books ever written. As a male, I had little trouble falling in love with Jane's character. I think the story is appealing to both genders. Some of what happens is predictable, but there are some twists that will take the listener by surprise. If, like me, guilt moves you to read/listen to some of the classics that you missed growing up, pick Jane Eyre. It's worth the time.
