When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.
But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her... a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards... and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

I normally love Nicholas Sparks book but this one was only so so. On the plus side, I really enjoyed the narrator's voice. She did a great job with the different characters. On the minus side, this book was predictable with a twist at the end that I really didn't care for. The Lucky One by Nicholas Spark touches on the same issue from a different perspective in a more interesting and creative way.
I am not much into sappy love stories and this is what I expected when I decided to buy Safe Haven. I thought something easy on the ears would be a good choice to do housework by. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The characters had depth and substance and it wasn't pages and pages of verbal and physical love making. The twist at the end was enough to make me consider trying another Sparks novel. Recommended for the love story lovers as well as someone just interested in a good listen sans much sap.

This was a great book to listen to. Suspenful, well writened and had a great ending. I hated for it to end. Nicholas Sparks showed his colors on this one and earns all the credits for being an awesome author.
Well I am hooked! This was my first purchase, I thought what the heck it didn't cost anything I will give it a try. What a great first book to try. I found myself volunteering to go to the store just to listen to the rest of it. The reader was wonderful!
I loved this book! Nicholas Sparks did it again. I finished it in two days, much to my husbands chagrin I couldn't turn it off. The characters are so endearing. This story is gripping and touching. I highly recommend this audio book.
I finished this book pretty quickly, and enjoyed the listen. I predicted the "surprise" ending fairly early, but it didn't take away from the fact that I liked the characters and the story quite nicely held my interest. Mr. Sparks must be quite a gentle and sincere man, and I loved how he dedicated the book to his wife, who lost both her parents recently. I recommend this book.
I've listened to all of Nicholas Sparks' books. And they can be a bit sappy, and hapily ever after and that is ok. But this one dragged on forEVER. So many details we didn't need to hear, especially when the character switched to the "villian" husband. It's as if Mr Sparks ran out of things to write, but needed to fill the pages for some reason. He would have done better to write "very, very, very," over and over, rather than the lunatic rantings that we had to endure.
The narrator was ok thru most of it, but she often mixed her accents and had the North Carolina people talking with the Dorchester, MA accents. Also her inflections with the character Jo were so over the top emotional, that is was comical and I had to adjust my volume. The opposite for Katie, the main character. She was flat. Boring and I couldn't understand why ANYONE would have fallen in love with her, much less FIGHT over her. And the "twist" at the end was really silly...really.
Anyhoo. It entertained me slightly on a long flight and I finished it, so I'll give it 3 stars.
This has to be one of my favorites that Nicholas Sparks has written. It keeps you wanting more and I loved every word and every chapter, always wanted to continue. I have read all of his books and other than the Notebook, this is my favorite
Loved this book, could not stop listening to it. I had to keep finding stuff to do so I could listen to it with my ipod. I laughed, cried, and was very happy listening to this book. Well Done!!!
I loved this book! It held my attention all the way to the end. I would highly recommend it...and I'll be listening to it again!
