Publisher's Summary

Author Cressida Cowell has written several warmly received books for children. Booklist calls How to Train Your Dragon a “wildly enjoyable comic fantasy.”

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III may be the son of the brave leader of the mighty Viking tribe the Hairy Hooligans, but he certainly doesn’t feel very heroic. When Hiccup and the other boys his age are challenged to pick baby dragons from the dragon nursery, Hiccup actually manages to catch a small one. But now how will he train his stubborn new pet?

"Not the same as the movie"

Amazing -- how screenwriters can take the names of characters and the blurb from the back of a book and come up with something completely different than the original book. In this case, the movie was really good. And I thought this book was even better.
Hiccup's attempts to raise and train his dragon, Toothless, are important -- if he fails, he will be outcast from the tribe. He and his friend try different methods of training their dragons, as do the other boys of the tribe who must also succeed or be thrown out of the tribe into the wilds. When one boy mutters, he's asked, "Where do you think you are? A democracy like the Roman Empire?"
A good, fun listen. If you enjoyed the movie, you'll love the book. If you didn't see the movie, you will probably still love the book.

    "A delightful suprise"

I purchased this book for my 5 Year old daughter and I to listen to while in the car (I can only take so much Lady Gaga). This is a delightful story that had my daughter (and myself) engrossed. Be forewarned, it bear very little..if any..resemblance to the movie. My daughter tells me that we did see the movie, and that it was indeed very different. If it is the movie I think I remember, well then about the only thing in common with the book is the name of the lead character and the group of Vikings (if that). The book is actually much better in my mind, and a better story for children as it teaches that sometimes what people call "ordinary" can in fact be "extraordinary" and that appearances can be deceiving. In other words, the story is about an "ordinary" boy who becomes a hero, despite what his peers say to him. A great story. Highly recommend it.

    "Better than the movie!"

My boys loved this book and continue to listen to it over and over.

Everyone will tell you "I liked the book better than the movie" I have to say that I will forever be an audible fan over going to the theater. I am a busy mom that likes to use quality daytime in the park or helping with a craft hands on with the kids rather than going to sit in the theater drinking too much soda or eating too much junk food. I try to read at night before bed but we tend to fall asleep before we get through a chapter. So while I am making dinner or cleaning and the kids are bored I turn on Audible. My seven and five year old sat for 3 hours straight listening to How to Train Your Dragon and was excited to tell me about all the different colored dragons which provided the family wonderful dinner conversation. I have also played it again in the car to keep their little minds occupied until we arrive at our destination. We may see the movie yet but it will have to be on video later on.

    "Charming story, terrific performance!"

As other reviewers have noted, the plot of the book is quite different from the movie, but both are cute, inventive, and entertaining. This audiobook, while short, was a great choice for both adults and kids. I listened to this book in the car while on a longer drive with my niece and nephew, and they actually requested that we sit in the car for a while after arriving at our destination to finish listening to a chapter! Terrific performance by Gerard Doyle!

"7 year old son loves this series"

Our 7 year old son has moderate to severe dyslexia and hates to read because of the effort it takes. We turned to audio books to instill a love of reading with moderate success until we found this series. Our son BEGS to listen to How to Train Your Dragon and would turn down video games for a chance to listen! Our only complaint is the stores are far too short for the price.

    "Kids Fav. !!!"

I got this for my boys (8yrs old).....

They loved the movies and now they love this book. They had me put it on cd so that they could listen to it over and over!

It's funny and the narrater is great.... They even sat for a long time just listening intently, which is super rare for my twin boys!

I'm excited to see how well they enjoy the next one in the series.

    "Awesome"

The reader and writer are all that and a bag of chips. As an adult I got this for Children to listen to, and have enjoyed it just as much as they all did. The reader is great. :)

Middle aged female who loves books of all kinds as long as the story is engaging. Doesn't review all books she reads, but does read all reviews of books she reads. Haha.

    "Great book for everyone"

Although this is a book probably written for males 8 yrs to 12 years old as it is filled with adventure, dragons, vikings, buggers, poop, and other interesting items sure to keep the young males happy and engaged, I found it to be very entertaining and fun filled! It is not a copy of the movie which has the same name, which was a bit of a shock, but it is similar. It was good enough that I also have purchased other books in the series. The narrator, G, Doyle is fantastic.

    "Really fun book!"

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the movie. And I am surprised how much the two differ from each other!

Toothless sounds like Smegol from LoTR and is annoying. He is far from being cute like in the movie. He's also isn't a Nitemare. But that has less to do with the book then it does the movie.

Anyways fun book! I'd like to get the David Tennant one. I only got this version because it was on sale.

A 50-something who loves sci-fi, cozy mysteries, thrillers, an occasional romance, and any genre if it is a good story. And especially if it makes me laugh! No vampires or zombies though - these are NOT sci-fi!

    "Love It!"

I must admit that I never saw the movie, but I love the book! Narration was excellent, and the story is well-written. This is one I will share with my grandchildren (once I have some). This will keep adults and kids entertained throughout.
