Great Expectations is Charles Dickens' penultimate novel. Collected and dense, with a conciseness unusual for him, the novel represents Dickens' peak and maturity as an author. Great Expectations was written, according to G. K. Chesterton, in "the afternoon of his life and glory".
Great Expectations is a coming-of-age novel. Narrated in the first person, it depicts the growth and personal development of an orphan named Pip.
Its colorful cast is distinct and well-known: the capricious Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Joe the blacksmith who is always kind and generous, the dry and sycophantic Uncle Pumblechook, criminal but civil Mr Jaggers, Wemmick and his dual personality, and the eloquent and wise friend Herbert Pocket. Throughout the narrative, typical Dickensian themes emerge: wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil. The novel has become very popular and is now taught as a classic in many English classes. It has been adapted many times in film and other media.

"All of one piece and consistently truthfull." (George Bernard Shaw)
"Psychologically the latter part of Great Expectations is about the best thing Dickens ever did." (George Orwell)
"Expectations surpassed"
Tadhg Hynes brings a staggering range of character and emotional tone to bear on Dickens' late masterpiece. By turns suspenseful, moving, and irresistibly comic, Hynes' performance could not conceivably be bettered. Maintaining distinctive voices for each character, Hynes does the job of an entire troupe of actors, while maintaining the restraint and wry detachment of Dickens' narration. As a first introduction to audiobooks I found this rendition, all 19 hours, left me wanting more.
"My Favorite Recording of Great Expectations!"
My favorite way to enjoy Dickens' works is to listen to them. The only way Great Expectations could get any better than this recording, is if I could hear Dickens himself reading it (and even then, it would depend on Dickens' voice!).
Joe will always be my favorite. He's so loving and good-hearted.
Tadhg's performances are always superb, and this one was right up there with the others. It's wonderful to hear his love for the books that he reads.
If you're considering buying this recording, go for it! I've listened to more than one other recording of Great Expectations (including one previously purchased from Audible), and this one is far and away the best.
