Star Trek: The Return (Adapted)

This book kept me interested into the very end. I am not a person who picks apart a book on its technical details but by the pure enjoyment of the read. I am sure there are parts which are not up to the other Star Trek writes, but I still enjoyed it considerably. Having it narrated by William Shatner was a bonus and added to the books quality. I will be listening too all the books in this series.

I have to begin by saying that I am not a connoisseur of Star Trek novels (this is my first). I've enjoyed the shows and movies, but haven't looked for deep philosophy or meaning far beneath the surface...interesting characters, fun stories, some exicting missions, a compelling view of the human condition...that's what Star Trek is to me. With that proviso I have to say that this audiobook was GREAT! Indeed there was NO character development, dots from previous Star Trek stories were connected and, yes, Shatner sounded a little silly as Data. But it was a great ride! There was suspense, excitement, surprise...all the right emotional notes were hit, and Shatner's performance of the abridged story was just perfect. No one else could have been as convincing as he was. Yes, it highlighted the invincibility of James T. Kirk, but isn't that part of what we love about Star Trek, the larger-than-life aspects of so many of the characters? "The Return" hits all the right notes without being unduly pretentious or compromising anything that makes Star Trek so enjoyable and fun. The production is impecible and the length is just right so your commute can be a little less boring for a day or two. Beam aboard for the ride and you won't be sorry!

and it is wince-inducing. This is a sub-par Star Trek novel. In fact it sounds like a slightly longer version of fanfic that you can find online. The plot is thin and there is zero character development.
It gets two stars because it's amusing to here Shatner give voice to Data.

After the Ashes of Eden, I was motivated to try out more of the Kirk books by Shatner, but I was very disappointed by The Return. The beginning is interesting, and I?ll accept the premise, which is a bit weak, but the story evolves into the lowest common denominator ST novel. There are so many good ST writers out there who set the bar high, this is not one of them. As the story went on, it became a series of dots from STNG and STV just being connected. Most troublesome was ease and almost dismissive way any troubles Kirk found himself in could be overcome with little or no effort on his part, just a single sentence from the narrator (which after all is Shatner coming to the rescue of Kirk I guess). I at least expected to see some team work and classic ST interdependence to solve problems, but not here. Kirk is out on his own (with the narrator) and nothing can stop him.

I really didn't care for the movie "Star Trek-Generations". I'll go as far as saying that I like Star Trek 5 even better than "Generations"
I didn't like the way they killed off Kirk. If Spock, Scotty and Bones can still be alive in the future during STNG, why not Kirk? This book should have been the next movie in the Star Trek franchise after Generations. It picks up right after the events of that movie and it's no cheesy resurrection story, it was well thought out and executed. This is one of the top two best Star Trek audio books of all time by any author.(Go ahead and look it up)
The sound effects and music really add to the experience and Shatner does a good job with the different voice characterizations. A must listen for any Star trek fan.

Story was predictable with far too many plot holes. Shatner's performances are always a bit campy but he reaches new heights in this reading. I'm a long time Star Trek fan who grew up on TOS and even I had a hard time listening to this.

The idea of visiting the Borg homeworld was novel but coul dhave been done much better

A novel by Shatner, read by Shatner, about Shatner. William Shatner brings every major character from every StarTrek franchise together for this story, but it just never all falls in to place. Every woman Kirk/Shatner encounters wants to sleep with him and the story turns narcissistic. He tries to get poetic when he describes worlds and settings, but it just sounds like someone piling words together.

StarTrek: The Genisis Wave.

Shatner has a great voice and being that the story revolved around Kirk, his narration and dialog was perfect for the book.

One of the main characters gets captured by the Borg, and then the Borg ship goes in to warp. The phrase “he has gone where no man….has gone before” is uttered.

We, in our family, are Star Trek fans. However, this story just did not hold my interest.

Story and plot was well written and closely matches Star Trek storyline. A must for any Star Trek fan. Shatner is awesome!

Smart, Engaging, Great

The fact that James T. Kirk was brought back to life by William Shatner himself after the weak death scene in Star Trek: Generations.

Kirk voiced by William Shatner, everyone else voiced by him doesn't work entirely though.
