"Teen years favorite comes to Audible --at last!"
I have loved Georgette Heyer's Regency romances since I was in junior high and now I am in 7th heaven that she is finally on Audible. If you want steamy love scenes in your romance novels, you are in the wrong place; GH novel are all formula -- handsome romantic hero, feisty but demur heroine all wrapped in the manners and mannerisms of early 19th century England. Lord gets his lady and they live happily ever after. These are stories you can give a 10 year old and not worry about the vocabulary or even the slight hint of explicit sex (or even implicit).
I love her story telling; there is lots of detail so that you really get a feel for what life was like 200 years ago. She creates the whole Regency world for you--well at least the world of the rich and titled. Her language and choice of words really makes you think you are in Regency England and unlike so many of the historical romances of today, GH really sticks to the mores and mindset of the era.
As for Sprig Muslin, the narrator is a delight and I look forward to listening to the story over and over again.
"Fabulous narrator"
I love all of Georgette Heyer's books. Listening to them adds a great deal. This narrator is the best! She adds small laughs or sighs perfectly.
"Very funny"
Another one of Georgette Heyers very funny novels, where the main story entertains through complicated twists and turns, and totally revels in the characters outwitting each other. Sian Phillips has been so superb in all of the Heyer novels i've listened to I can just relisten and re-enjoy. I just wish there were more read by her, June Barrie and Phylidda Nash, instead of by Eva Matheson (the only audible book i've had to dump off my ipod - unable to persevere listening after several attempts to get past the first few chapters)!
"Delightful narration offsets weaker story line"
This isn't one of my favorite Heyer books in print form, but it is without question my favorite of Heyer's books in audio. The narrator nails the characterization of these people *perfectly*. If you have, or have had, a teenage daughter, this is a must listen. You will laugh out loud!
"Very entertaining book and great narrator"
I'm so glad to see more of Georgette Heyer's books available as audio downloads. Only tape cassette versions have been available for far too long. Sian Phillips is a wonderful actress and a great narrator. She does an amazing job with all the different character voices. Now if only "The Reluctant Widow," "The Black Sheep," and everything else by GH would become available as audio downloads, I'd be over the moon.
"Very enjoyable listen!"
This was never one of my favorite Georgette Heyer books but after listening to Sian Phillips excellent characterization it finally made sense and I find myself listening again and laughing out loud. I truly have enjoyed the reading and now the story!
"As charming and delightful as ever"
Reading Georgette Heyer's Regency novels is like eating dark chocolate--a guilty pleasure that turns out to be good for you.
They are formula novels only because so many writers have tried to imitate them, and none, with the possible exception of Jane Aitken, has managed to come close to the combination of intelligence, humour, and excellent writing that is Georgette Heyer.
More please.
"Classic Heyer"
This is a very good Regency romance novel by Georgette Heyer (who in my estimation is the absolute queen of romance) but it not her best . Heyer romance novels take you to a charming world. Some of her characters are hilarious. Her herorines are extremely likeable. Heyer manages to let you see the passion between characters withour resort to riipping clothes off. I think the main reason I give this four stars instead of five is that there is not as much passion between the hero and heroine in this book as there is in other Heyer romances. However, it is still an excellent book.
My goal is to write a review of everything I've listened to, but I'm woefully behind. Wish I would have kept up. I'm a writer!
"Delightful characters"
I read this some time ago, but enjoyed Sian Phillips performance very much. I forgot how interesting and charming Heyer's characters can be. Great bedtime listening! I wish Sian Phillips would do "The Grand Sophy," by Heyer.
"So Enjoyable!"
This book was a delight. I have only read one or two Georgette Heyer books but it is so refreshing to listen/read a historical romance that is not loosely veiled soft core porn. Heyers use of language is delightful and the narrator does it full justice. This was a great fun listen and i will be looking for more books (not just Heyer) from this narrator
