Publisher's Summary

Based on the epic videogame from BioWare and LucasArts.

The Sith Empire is in flux. The Emperor is missing, presumed dead, and an ambitious Sith lord’s attempt to seize the throne has ended fatally. Still, Darth Karrid, commander of the fearsome Imperial battle cruiser Ascendant Spear, continues her relentless efforts to achieve total Sith domination of the galaxy.

But Karrid’s ruthless determination is more than matched in the steely resolve of Theron Shan, whose unfinished business with the Empire could change the course of the war for good. Though the son of a Jedi master, Theron does not wield the Force - but like his renowned mother, the spirit of rebellion is in his blood. As a top covert agent for the Republic, he struck a crucial blow against the Empire by exposing and destroying a Sith superweapon arsenal - which makes him the ideal operative for a daring and dangerous mission to end Ascendant Spear’s reign of terror.

Joined by hot-headed smuggler Teff’ith, with whom he has an inexplicable bond, and wise Jedi warrior Gnost-Dural, Darth Karrid’s former master, Theron must match wits and weapons with a battle-tested crew of the most cold-blooded dark-side disciples. But time is brutally short. And if they don’t seize their one chance to succeed, they will surely have countless opportunities to die.

    "So much potential....so much rehash."

It pains me to give a mediocre review to any Sci Fi series, especially that of Star Wars, and such a rich and deep plot period of the Old Republic.

Whereas the the other previous titles tied to this era stood out, I really felt as if Annihilation was just a retread of so many story telling cliches and could have been told in any genre...just change the character names and setting and you've heard this tale 100x before.

There were two exceptions to my review, however. First, narrator Marc Thompson does a really nice job of playing so many voices. He really has a distinct take on the dozens of characters within this story which I think is amazing. Although, once in a while he does tend to get a little to over-the-top and emotionally frenzied during climatic or action packed sequences. Second, the only really interesting parts to me where that with Darth Karrid and her role on her capital ship, the Ascendent Spear.

Truthfully, I would have liked to have had the author focus more on Karrid and her ship and make that a story onto itself. It would have been much more interesting and ominous than the other predictible elements.

    "Another Excellent Star Wars Storyline"
What made the experience of listening to Annihilation the most enjoyable?

I really enjoy the way Marc Thompson brings the Star Wars Charactures alive. Each voice is different and very distinict. The story was very well written.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Annihilation?

When the supreme commander revealed he was the father.

What does Marc Thompson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The GREAT voices of each characters, and he never forgets the voices he has used for each individual character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No

"Best Star Wars I have ever read!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Annihilation to be better than the print version?

At this time, I have both read this book and listened to it. I love the different accents Marc Thompson gives the characters. I think I do like the audio version more.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Annihilation?

The first, sort of, action scene where Theron steals the Black Cipher. It was a really fun part of the book.

Which character – as performed by Marc Thompson – was your favorite?

While my favorite character is Theron (how can he not be!? He's the son of the 2 most freaking awesome characters ever!!!), I love the way Thompson preformed Teff'ith. I love her accent and the way he makes her sound. Not much different from the way I read her, but definitely gives more life to the character.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Star Wars meets 007 in this action adventure!

    Any additional comments?

Again, this is the best Star Wars I have ever read. It was extremely fast paced and was filled with both intense action and some family drama. I suppose I am used to reading a series, but this book just blows every other single Star Wars book out of the park!

"Skip this one if you like a coherant story"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book series is based on a game so, gamers maybe? Gamers with really low expectations.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Looking forward to Tim Zahn's Scoundrels

What about Marc Thompson’s performance did you like?

Usually I really love Marc Thompson. He's one of the best in the business but I thought he made the thin cartoonish characters sound even more cartoonish. I don't blame him though. It must have been pretty tough trying to make any of this dialogue sound believable.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I really wanted to like this one.

    Any additional comments?

Just this. Each Drew Karpyshyn book seems worse than the last. The Bane books were great fun. Revan was uneven but endurable. Annihilation was just all over the place and had an unlikable lead character. It's very hard to care about a Star Wars book when you don't like the protagonist.

"Another "Superweapon" story is not a bad thing!"
What made the experience of listening to Annihilation the most enjoyable?

Marc Thompson's narration is fantastic as always! The story was actually very entertaining at times it feels like James Bond in the Star Wars universe. I really liked the espionage of Theron

What other book might you compare Annihilation to and why?

It's similar to all the Old Republic novels in its feel. Makes me want to jump back on the MMO ASAP!

What does Marc Thompson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voices are truly incredible. It's hard to believe it all comes from the same man! He is very enthusiastic in his reading and actually acts out the dialogue. I believe what I am hearing and that's the mark of a great narrator!

"Solid middle of the road Star Wars"

This is another among the solid, but basically middle of the road, Star Wars genre books. The entire "The Old Republic" series, while interesting as independent books, do not lead one to another in a typical series fashion -- each one is centered around new characters at a different point in time. Nevertheless, "Annihilation" does stand well on its own, and I very much appreciated that the main character's background is different from that which is most focused on in many Star Wars books. But it does not approach the epic quality of the more intimately connected series.

As for the narration, Marc Thompson continues to do a top job with Star Wars as always.

Seriously this book is good! Idk why people gave it bad rates. I though it was pure Star Wars the Old Republic and it made me feel like I was listening to someone playing the game!

    "Another Thrilling Episode in TOR!"

Drew delivers another excellent character driven story. Marc does a wonderful job with the narration and voices. I recommend this to any Star Wars fan who is currently playing SWTOR. The book adds to the backdrop of SWTOR in additon to adding to my enjoymnet of SWTOR.

I hope Drew and Marc continue their successful and creative collaboration!
