The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Italian Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons. In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.
Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Italian alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)
"Learn Italian while driving to work!"
I've now finished all 1-30 units of Phase 1, in anticipation of a vacation to Italy, and am very impressed with the program. It's not your standard memorization / grammatical structure drills like we had in school. It teaches you conversationally, in a very organic way, that seems to assimilate and stick better. I think the conversational emphasis gives you a more natural accent too. Highly recommended.
"So Far, So Good"
I have never done well with learning a foreign language. However, I am up to lesson 13 and am retaining about 85% so I'm impressed with the program. The woman speaker is a bit harder to understand..
"Ready for Italia!"
Io e mio marito andiamo a Roma domani! This was an excellent way for me to work on learning some Italian while I take the dog for walks (there goes that crazy woman walking her dog and spouting random Italian words and phrases again) or commute to/from work. I found that it worked best for me to listen to a unit a couple of times before moving on. I also had a dictionary to check the spelling and conjugations because at times it was difficult to tell what they were saying. For example, I thought they were saying "abesso" for now and it was really "adesso". I feel like the method is excellent and that I know enough to speak to desk clerks at hotels or train stations, ask for directions, and say that I would like some wine (Vorrei bere di'l vino). Grazie Mille Pimsleur! Ciao!
"Amazing."
This has been my first encounter with Pimsleur's method of learning languages and I must say I am AMAZED. I go throug one lesson led per day (that is 30 minutes) and it's like my brain is memorizing EVERYTHING without me even trying to do so. What kept me even more motivated was seeing my progress. Since Lesson 1 the audiobook guides you through Italian in such a way that you are instantly asked to formulate sentences on your own with the words you've learned on so you do feel like you are actually speaking the language. This is so motivating. And whenever I'm in Italy, I can see that with each trip/lesson I can say more and more. Can't recommend this method enough. Oh, and no boring grammar questions. It feels more like speaking your native language (you know uoi're saying it right, you're not really sure though what the rules behind it are) than a newly acquired, awkward book foreign language. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
"love it!"
