Hesse's masterpiece, set in the distant past of the Middle East, tells the story of a young Brahmin's son, Siddhartha, who leaves his father's house in search of his own life. With his boyhood friend, Govinda, he lives as an ascetic until he encounters the Illustrious One, the Buddha. He does not stay, but continues on his journey. He becomes rich, but then leaves it all to return to the path he had almost abandoned, that of seeking enlightenment.
