Publisher's Summary

China's economy has undergone a remarkable transformation, from Communist backwater to world power. But even in a totalitarian regime, the transition hasn't been seamless.

For an entire week in January 2006, the daily program Marketplace broadcast live from China, to report first-hand on a booming economy that has altered the competitive landscape. In this collection, you'll hear all five episodes - plus a special edition of the companion program, Marketplace Money.

Among the subjects covered:

  • A new generation of people in China suddenly has choices about where to live, what kind of job to do, even whom to marry. How are they handling this new level of self-determination?
  • Newly-wealthy entrepreneurs are thriving in China. But they're also struggling with the decadence and consumption that have become a part of success.
  • Americans take ordering online for granted. But in China, it's not so easy. For one thing, almost no one uses credit cards.
  • Counterfeit DVDs hit the streets just as the real thing hits movie theaters in the United States.
Now, the Bush Administration is putting pressure on the Chinese government to crack down on piracy. Join the Marketplace team as it travels the length and breadth of the world's most-populous country to find out what makes China's economy tick - and its impact on all of us.

"Good, but still a lot of little new reports."

It’s interesting material, but putting together lots of short stories to create a long “document” is surprisingly unsatisfying. It starts to feel repetitious and shallow.
