The leader, Vito Corleone, is the Godfather. He is a benevolent despot who stops at nothing to gain and hold power. His command post is a fortress on Long Island from which he presides over a vast underground empire that includes the rackets, gambling, bookmaking, and unions. His influence runs through all levels of American society, from the cop on the beat to the nation's mighty.
Mario Puzo, a master storyteller, introduces us to unforgettable characters, and the elements of this world explode to life in this violent and impassioned chronicle.
A multi-voice production.

"Filled with the requisite valor, love, and rancor of a great epic, The Godfather is the definitive gangster novel." (Amazon.com)
Computer Programmer and Worship Leader. Have enjoyed reading since my mom got me hooked on Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie prior to my teen years. My brother got me hooked on audio books after I started having a longer commute to work. Love a variety of genres.
"Couldn't Disagree More..."
With the folks who gave this book (and the narrator) low ratings. Wow - were they listening to the same audio book I listened to?
This is one of the few multi-voice audio books I've listened to and I thought they did a great job!
I was a little surprised at how graphic the book is for the time period that it was written, but that's probably just my naivete.
I thought the story was compelling and enjoyed the additional chapters on Johnny Fontaine (that was not carried into the movie).
The scariest part is wondering how true to life the book really is, and whether the mafia really has this much power.
Great book - lived up to its billing!
"Movie is Great, Book is Better"
This is an excellent production of the book, the cast performs brilliantly; it's like listening to an unabridged radio play. If you have only seen the film, you cannot appreciate the depth of the characters until you experience the book. It is a must read.
"Enticing until the end..........."
I loved the Charater narrators. It made a great book more like an "old time Radio" experience and helped develop the charaters even more. Brilliant!
"EXCELLENT!"
Having never read this before and watched the movies over and over again, I was excited to get right into this. I was not disappointed. The added details and back stories make The Godfather better than ever. Highly recommend this. Great narration, best I have listened to yet.
"Excellent!"
When each character has a different voice it is probably going to be good and this audio book does. The book is much the same as the movie with the background added. Some of the background related to sex would have pushed the movie beyond the "R" rating. If you liked the movie; get this too!
"Great performance; great book"
I had seen the movie a long time ago and didn't remember most of it, so listening to the book was a great treat. The narration and sound quality are quite good -- the copyright for the audio is in the mid-80's so it's not quite as crisp and clean as some newer audiobooks, but this did not detract from the story or narration for me.
This IS a multi-narrated story, but this worked fine for me. I recommend this story highly.
"This book is much better than the movies"
I will listen to this book again. The story is as relevant today as it was in the 40's. I am really glad to have this book in my library, this is a keeper.
"Lisa"
If you can believe it I have never seen the movie or read the book. I enjoyed listening to this book, which is an epic story of an Italian immigrant family who happens to be a major part of the mafia. Found the characters really well developed and the story engrossing.
Great narration.
There were a lot of moving parts of this book but one that stands out for me is Lucy finding love after Sonny's death with a doctor that made her whole in more ways than one.
Can't wait to listen to the second book int his series.
I read so I can write
"A Must Read"
For all who have their heads in sand about what goes on in the wide wide world of crime and how much of ordinary every day life is affected by it, books like this offer some enlightenment. The Godfather movies were a big deal when they came out, but how much of it was believed to be real is in doubt. Anyone who has spent part or all of their life in New York or New Jersey has a better idea.
This book tells an interesting story using fiction to soften the blow. And it is well told. A book worth having and reading.
I loved reading for years, but now I've become so attached to Audible I'm finding reading tedious. Is that a bad thing?....
"The Masterpiece of its Genre"
I read this in my teens and of course I've seen the movies. Listening to it after all these years gave me a new appreciation for Puzo's masterpiece as well as Audible. I simply didn't want the book to end. I was disappointed to learn Gofather 2 was not based on a sequel.
The narration was superb, a difficult task for such a familiar story.
