It's summer 1795 and renowned artist Joshua Pope accepts a commission to paint a wedding portrait of Herbert Bentnick and his betrothed Sabine Mercier at Bentnick's country house in Astley. Whilst tending exotic plants in the conservatory Sabine stumbles across the body of a man and, puzzled by the lack of concern about this bizarre death, Joshua feels duty-bound to investigate.
Why do Bentnick's children regard their future stepmother with suspicion and fear? And is there a connection between Sabine's own daughter and the deceased?
