Publisher's Summary

The shocking tale from true crime queen Ann Rule.

Who is Brad Cunningham? How could five beautiful, intelligent, and successful women believe he was their dream come true? Ask any women who ever longed for "the perfect man".

Loni Ann, Cynthia, Lauren, Cheryl, and Sara seemed to have it all - beauty, wealth, children, and a husband who they believed to be this perfect man - Brad Cunningham. He was handsome, charismatic, and mysterious. They adored him and tried to give him all he wanted. But he wanted everything: sex, money, and it seemed, their very lives. How long would it take before he finally got what he deserved?

This question haunts Dead by Sunset, Ann Rule's riveting and impeccably researched study of the destructive relationships, multiple marriages, financial manipulations, and monstrous acts of harassment and revenge that surrounded Brad Cunningham and his wives. It is also a penetrating - and ultimately shocking - recreation of Cheryl's murder and the eight years it took to bring her killer to justice.

Dead by Sunset is a chilling look at the evil that lurks behind the most charming of facades and a fascinating homage to the kind of courage and brilliance it takes to combat it.

"My house is clean, my dogs are exhausted!"
What made the experience of listening to Dead by Sunset the most enjoyable?

This book was so engrossing! I got a lot done during the many hours I listened to the book; scrubbing, weeding and long dog-walks were my excuse to keep listening until it was done!

Ann Rule's books have been my guilty pleasure for years. I don't really go for true crime books EXCEPT for hers. The level of detail is so fine that I wonder HOW she is able to get so close to the participants in the stories she tells. And she tells the stories with great respect and regard for the victims. She must be a remarkably compassionate and sincere woman.

The story itself is almost unbelievable! If it were fiction, I’d probably toss it aside, thinking it was too far-fetched. How could so many smart, attractive women fall for the likes of Brad Cunningham?!

I’ve read that Ann Rule is not so interested in the “big” stories like Casey Anthony or OJ Simpson; instead she likes to find stories that might not otherwise be told. Thank goodness for that! Casey and OJ stories are ubiquitous; this story, like all of Ann Rule’s stories, is well told, fascinating and might not have been told had Ann Rule not been interested in the case.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I think outrage, fury and frustration would better describe the reactions I had while listening to the book. I wonder, if someone observed me during my dog walks, if it would look as if I were mad at my dogs!

"Ann Rule at her best! Narration very suitable!"
What did you love best about Dead by Sunset?

It's a never-ending roller coaster of disbelief in how people behave the way they do, and those trusting enough to allow them to. Ann crafted this story beautifully, a fiction novel can't even compete - in this case, truth IS stranger than fiction.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely - although I'd seen the movie and knew the story, the book holds so much more detail, contains so many more rich characters, sub-plots and so much history that just can't fit into a movie... If you enjoyed the movie I would HIGHLY recommended this book. You'll bring so much more away, things will make much more sense.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Too many to pinpoint.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    I think

    Any additional comments?

It may be long, but I was never bored. Also, I've read where a couple people didn't care for the narration. I was hesitant to purchase it due to that, but I have thoroughly enjoyed his narration and story telling techniques. I'm so glad I went ahead and purchased it anyway. I thought he did a great job.

    "Great true crime, Great narration."

Really enjoyed this true crime book. This was my first Ann Rule novel and I was impressed. Ann uses her story telling skills along with her well researched facts to tell a great tale. The narrator was great. On Audible after the initial review, reviews often follow that are similar in content, and I wonder if this is what has happened with reviews regarding the narrator because he does a fabulous job here. Do not be disuaded.

"Amazing Read; Wonderfully Written & Read"
Would you listen to Dead by Sunset again? Why?

Yes, this was a great book. It was engrossing, kept me wanting to hear more. It was such a tragic story that kept you needing to hear the outcome of the man accused of the atrocious murder.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot definitely kept me on the edge of my seat; the accused seems to be quite crafty in regards to getting away with everything.

Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not but I look forward to such.

    Any additional comments?

Ann Rule did such a great job with this book - it was a captivating listen and I have listened to it more than once. How this guy could get 4 intelligent, successful, career-minded, educated, not to mention great mothers to their children to marry him and then proceed to run over them emotionally, mentally, FINANCIALLY and commit serious Parental Alienation with their children, is hard to believe - but he did. It was like a HUGE "Who The Bleep Did I Marry?" flashback! You must get this book!

    "Ann Rule's most understated work"

Over the years I have read many Ann Rule books - some I have liked more than others. I think this one has been somehow lost in the shuffle. It is not as emotionally gripping as Small Sacrifices, but is super suspenseful. How did this happen? How could this happen? And how can justice come to pass?
This book seems to have been downplayed whenever anyone mentions Ann Rule, though I am not sure why. The hold that Brad Cunningham had over beautiful, successful - though obviously emotionally dependent - women is astounding. And yet....

Richard Ferone's narration of this was fantastic! I have read several of his novel narrations and have had a hard time with them, but he was pitch-perfect here.

If you like true crime with character study, this book is for you! Well, well worth the credit!

"Wasn't crazy about narration, Story terrific tho"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I absolutely would recommend this book. If you're a fan of true crime, you will enjoy it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead by Sunset?

Over and over being bewildered at what an )@&*(# Brad Cunningham was to just about everyone around him, PARTICULARLY his wives and children. A classic psychopath.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Get a new voice? Seriously, the reading was well done, but I tired of his voice very quickly, which is a problem when you have to spend that amount of time listening to someone.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

You do NOT want to marry this man!

    Any additional comments?

Overall, I liked this book, finished it quickly, and was satisfied with the outcome.

"As usual, another great story by Ann Rule"

Another fabulous read by Ann Rule. Thoroughly researched and expertly brought to life. But then this is par for the course for her books.

The narrator though, less than stellar performance. I nearly stopped listening only 15 minutes into the book. I found his gravelly voice and odd up and down inflections extremely distracting. I did get used to his voice and strange style of speech quickly though, thankfully so it wasn't a huge distraction throughout the entire book.

I do have to wonder why he felt the need to make all the female voices whiny throughout the entire story though. Does he not like women? Does he feel all they do is whine? Not impressed at all by his performance, but at least I was able to get used to his voice and not find it so much of a distraction that I was unable to finish the book. Still, his whiny impersonation of every female voice in the book left a bad impression and I'll likely avoid any other books he narrates.
