Publisher's Summary

Stacy Justice is your average small-town reporter...who just so happens to be a witch. She’s never had the time or patience to mess around with the magic her grandmother and great-aunts are into, even though Grandma says Stacy has a higher calling. Right now, Stacy has stories to cover, her cousin Cinnamon’s bar to help run, and her cute cop boyfriend and flatulent Great Dane to keep her company.

But when someone sets Cinnamon’s bar ablaze - almost killing Stacy in the process - the green-eyed redhead will have to embrace her inner witch after all. Then her investigation into the crime reveals two things: Someone wants Stacy dead, and her so-called magic skills are rusty. If she doesn’t get her mojo back soon, she won’t live long enough to find out if Grandma was right.

A bewitching tale of mystery, magic, and mayhem, Opal Fire ignites a dazzling new mystery series.

"Very enjoyable mystery with a slight bit of magic"
What did you love best about Opal Fire?

The story was very entertaining and I'm a sucker for a story that has an animal as part of the story (Stacy's pet dog). Not only was it comical in places, but it had a good mystery at the heart of the story. Her family provided several laugh out loud moments and added to the story. This was a cleverly written who-done-it, without getting bogged down in the details. It was a very easy listen and the narrator was very good. I look forward to the other two books in the series.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Stacy's character and her relationship with her dog and family. Even though she was a witch, that was not the main focus of the story. She is a very normal type of person who just happens to have magical abilities and a dysfunctional family.

    Any additional comments?

If you are looking for a lighthearted, fun mystery with several quirky characters and a strong female lead character who is very likeable, then this is the story for you.

    "Narrator has an odd voice"
What did you love best about Opal Fire?

This is straight genre writing. It's a satisfying story and a good mystery.

Would you be willing to try another one of Amy Rubinate’s performances?

Yes and no. I want to listen to the other titles in this series, but I would rather this narrator were not doing them. I would never seek out this narrator. Her voice is very flat and has an odd inflection. Words like "death" sound like "dath," and I find that distracting.

    Any additional comments?

It's interesting to learn a bit about wicken culture.

A five star rating is a rare occurrence from me, as is a one star rating. I primarily listen to sci-fi though I will branch out occasionally. Political satire/comedy and I did manage to laugh my way through that whole E.L. James series... you know the one...

"There are some holes here, but decent effort"
What did you like best about Opal Fire? What did you like least?

Here we have a supernatural mystery where the supernatural doesn't overwhelm the story. It gives the story a good grounding while having enough wonder at what the supernatural side of things will contribute.

On the downside the characters were a little two dimensional. There needs to be a bit more development there. The villain of the piece was a little obvious and could have been more of a surprise with a few more tweaks and less mustache twirling.

Would you be willing to try another book from Barbra Annino? Why or why not?

I've already picked up the next two in the series. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and am always looking for promising authors.

What does Amy Rubinate bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A good narrator can make or break an audiobook. Additionally, the right narrator can really bring the characters to life. Amy R. does a good job here and I think can be safely added to the list of Narrators that I will gladly listen to.

    "Just okay..."

Nice book and easy listen. One thing that was quite distracting was that the narrator's voice was so robotic! Overall, the story was entertaining and the protagonist and other characters were likable, if one dimensional. While I generally love book series and usually am anxious to read more, I am not sure that I will continue this one. This may be one that I continue by just reading and not listening to an audiobook, as I have a feeling I would like it more without the narrator's voice.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

    "A Nice Lil Whodunit!"

This was a nice whodunit. No swear words, no sex, and a big loveable dog. Stacy was in denial of her magical powers because she believed she caused her fathers death. However, her grandmother thinks its time for her to accept her given gifts and get on with her calling. We all know Fate loves to dip her hands in and does just that. What happens next has Stacy becoming a believer and accepting the way things are.

The narrator did a fine job. I have heard so many mediocre narrators lately I have become inured to them, unless they are super horrible.

This is an easy listen, young people would enjoy this one also. Its pretty tame and clean.
