Publisher's summary

In 1908, near Folsom, New Mexico, a cowboy discovered the remains of a herd of extinct giant bison. By examining flint points embedded in the bones, archeologists later determined that a band of humans had killed and butchered the animals 12,450 years ago. This discovery vastly expanded America's known human history but also revealed the long-standing danger Homo sapiens presented to the continent's evolutionary richness.

Distinguished scholar Dan Flores's ambitious history chronicles the epoch in which humans and animals have coexisted in the "wild new world" of North America—a place shaped both by its own grand evolutionary forces and by momentous arrivals from Asia, Africa, and Europe. With portraits of iconic creatures such as mammoths, horses, wolves, and bison, Flores describes the evolution and historical ecology of North America like never before.

In thrilling narrative style, informed by genomic science, evolutionary biology, and environmental history, Flores celebrates the astonishing bestiary that arose on our continent and introduces the complex human cultures and individuals who hastened its eradication, studied America's animals, and moved heaven and earth to rescue them. Eons in scope and continental in scale, Wild New World is a sweeping yet intimate Big History of the animal-human story in America.

Great book, terrible narrator

Dan Flores is always an interesting well written read. Unfortunately, the story is limited by the terrible narration. Whoever they had do it cannot pronounce words appropriately and use accents while reading quotes like he is reading teen fiction. Perhaps these skills are better in that arena than books such as this.

Flores but off more than he can chew

Flores but off more than he can chew. He relies on a lot of “science” as absolutely 100% true.

Amazing written work from Dan…

Horrific readers voice. So distracting. Makes amazing content nearly impossible to listen too. Don’t recommend.

Buy it in print.

This narration manages to recite every word of the book, while conveying none of the story. Dan once again wrote a phenomenal book, and for me it was all but ruined by the narration.

Amazing story

It is a beautifully terrifying account of our impact on the new world. Repeated lines on recording. Still amazed and wishing I could have lived to see the waves of wildlife that once roamed.

Apparently humans suck

When you come right down to it, Flores is a pretty mainstream historical author. Humans mostly bad, animals all wonderful, climate change bad, tiresome lectures good.

Ok, you might have guessed I’m tired of the anti-humans. Stuff happened, people grow and learn. I wish I hadn’t blown 15 bucks on this.

I didn’t find the narration as awful as portrayed by other reviewers.

Great book, rough narrator.

A wonderful book that has a lot of great information, but the narrator’s voice and delivery really takes you out of the moment.

The voice of the narrorator is a bad fit for this book

I love the previous book and I want to love this one. It's so difficult to get through with this guys voice. They should redo it with the author's voice.

Amazing book

The only thing that could’ve been better is if the author read it, so that could drive in his sarcasm and humor. Otherwise amazing read

Wonderful history of US Ecology

Great book in many ways. Mostly limited to United States history so not much on Canada and Mexico. The only real negative is the narrator makes some pretty bad errors in pronunciation.
