Publisher's summary

A short audiobook I produced to be distributed through Amazon's ACX platform, explaining how that platform's sloppy rights verification and mandatory DRM screws over writers.

Totally agree with Doctorow

As a creator I’ve run into many ACX issues and have wide with much of my catalog. But, I can’t afford to not publish to all platforms like ACX. Perhaps some day. Excellent essay and I highly recommend this to all creators.

very clear explication of DRM’s impact on audiobooks

explains Amazon’s monopoly power in audiobooks and encourages users to look beyond Audible for books. Don’t assume no audiobook is available just because nothing comes up in an Amazon search

Important information

Saw Cory Doctrow give a talk recently promoting his latest book. Immediately came to Audible but only found this short essay in their vast library. Having just listened to him explain his viewpoints on similar matters, I understood where he was going with this by just reading the title. I bought this as a vote in support of spreading his words. You can go to his site to buy all his books directly.

I agree with Cory but Audible is unstoppable

I wish Audible provided simple MP3 files as it would give us additional ways to enjoy the stories we purchase here.

Food for thought

I never before considered DRM as an existential threat. Lots to consider in this brief essay.

Excellent commentary on a serious issue

DRM is a scourge on humanity and should be dismantled and removed altogether. And I will write a few more words because apparently I have to. 🙂

unsubscribing from audible thanks to this

I can't in my right mind justify paying Amazon monthly for books, audio or visual.

Ironically, this didn't appear in the app.

My girlfriend told me about this, and I had to find an external URL in order to pick it up. NUTS, and particularly ironic. I imagine it's delisted from the app store (as Doctorow speculates might happen at the end of this book).

This is a brief but informative piece on the atrocity to creativity that is DRM, and how Audible is not ever working for the customer's benefit, but rather, exclusively for it's own.

Hearing about Doctorow's First Law was really the peak of this, and such a great moment for me. The kind of thing where it's been on my mind, but never put so succinctly:
"If somebody puts a lock on something you own, against your wishes, and doesn't give you the key, then that lock is not for your benefit."
