Publisher's summary

The 11th book in the epic and best-selling series that has gripped millions.

A hero will be forged from this broken land. As seen on Netflix and BBC around the world.

Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg knows that peace is far from reach. Though he has won the battle for his ancestral home, rebellion looms in Mercia and invading Norsemen appear at every turn. With the country in turmoil, Uhtred comes face to face with King Skoll, a violent Norseman leading an army of úlfheðinn, or wolf warriors, hellbent on seizing a kingdom – and killing any in his path. Surrounded and outnumbered by new enemies, Uhtred must call on all his skill and courage to survive and prevent his beloved Northumbria from falling to the Viking hordes.

Continuation of Excellence

First introduced to Bernard Cornwell when I was stuck in a rainstorn in Papua New Guinea. Read the first Sharpes book in a day. Since then I have read every book Cornwell has written - even the romances.
But ......I do think that the Utred series is the best
Love them and always get excited when I see a new one on the horizon.

Thanks Bernard

Great

I loved the book and the series as a whole, but what I liked most was the anecdote by the author. Was a touch of class on his part.

A good story

I like the book, and Bates is growing on me as the narrator of the books, especially now that most of the characters have been “replaced” and the pronunciations, names and dialects are more consistent with the previous book.

That said the historical part of the book is where it’s lacking for me. I’m not a historian, but it feels as if there are more deviations form the actual history here than in most of the other books.
That said it is still a great story and well worth it of you have come this far following Uthred.

Great Read!

Matt Bates is an excellent narrator that brings energy and life to the story. I love the smaller scale of the conflict, and several plot twists keep things exciting!

Another great Uhtred story

Any long time reader of Bernard Cornwell's books know the quality of story they will receive from this book. I found this book brought out a lot more emotion in me then previous stories with some tough moments to listen to. Matt Bates does another stellar job reprising the role of Uhtred.

How England was made

Very good story overlayed on the history of how England was made. Someone like Uhtred and his followers must have done the work for the Kings at the time. Great 'back-story'.
