Publisher's summary

Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel meets The Handmaid's Tale.

Since September 11, 2001, the Western world has been preoccupied with Islam and its role in terrorism. Yet, public debate about the faith is polarized. One camp praises "the religion of peace", while the other claims all Muslims are terrorists. Canadian human rights activist Yasmine Mohammed believes both sides are dangerously wrong.

In Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, Yasmine speaks her truth as a woman born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. Despite being a first-generation Canadian, she never felt at home in the West. And even though she attended Islamic schools and wore the hijab since age nine, Yasmine never fit in with her Muslim family, either. With one foot in each world, Yasmine is far enough removed from both to see them objectively, yet close enough to see them honestly.

Part Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel, part The Handmaid's Tale, Yasmine's memoir takes listeners into a world few Westerners are privy to. As a college educator for over 15 years, Yasmine's goal is to unveil the truth. Is FGM Islamic or cultural? Is the hijab forced or a choice? Is ISIS a representation of "true" Islam or a radical corruption? And why is there so much conflicting information? Like most insular communities, the Islamic world has both an "outside voice" and an "inside voice". It's all but impossible for bystanders to get a straight answer.

Without telling anyone what to believe, Unveiled navigates the rhetoric and guides truth-seekers through media narratives, political correctness, and outright lies while encouraging listeners to come to their own conclusions.

Read or listen to this book... NOW.

I've been a follower of Yasmine on Twitter for a while now. I've seen many an interview she's given and loved the well-spoken, succinct way in which she speaks on the subject of not only hijab, but of true feminism in general, across the religious and ideological spectrum. In following her and learning of her story, I was amazed at how similar our life experiences are to a degree; she, an ex-Muslim, and I, as an admittedly lax (and stubborn) Jewish woman with a feminist bent, with a customarily "traditional" ethnic Jewish family. What can be said about this book, except, MIND BLOWN.

I'd planned on getting a hard copy of this book, but given that I love Yasmine's ability to thoroughly convey her message with her voice, I opted for the audio book. I'm so glad I did, The passion with which she read her own words made me as the listener run through the gamut of emotions; from anger to outrage; disappointment and sadness; (which led to the inevitable tears); to points of wry laughter and saying, "I know, right?! and, "Tell me about it."

What I loved about this book is that it was as if Yasmine was right there with you, taking you into her confidence and treating you as her trusted friend, as she poured out her heart and soul. She doesn't talk *at* you, but *to* you, in the sincere hopes that you'd take all she says in with an open heart and an open mind, This included researched facts and figures, as well as references to real world news examples of women who have fallen real victim to "the death shroud", as she calls it; especially at the hands of those that these women were supposed to depend on, but instead lived in fear of. Because she is so thorough, however, she also made mention of the men and boys who have also suffered at the hands of Islam-- whether it be through being LGBT or through apostasy--both of which are punishable by death.

There was many a point in my day of listening that I wished I could hug her, and reassure her that she was not alone. And indeed she isn't, I commend Yasmine for having both the bravery and the courage to write and narrate this book, It takes a good amount of both to be willing to open that obviously *very* sensitive Pandora's box, especially among Muslims themselves, who are so conditioned and indoctrinated through a fear of "G_d", that they follow blindly. Those that do question, unfortunately suffer in silence, fearing being ostracized by both family and community at large. It is these people that must be shown the light/ empowered.

Instead, Yasmine points out that Western feminists, the far Left and corporations, in their attempts to veil their own racism and/or assuage their own guilt, have made the hijab into a symbol of "beauty" and "empowerment" here at home, while brave women around the world are being imprisoned for decades, tortured, and even killed for daring to remove it. Yasmine closes her book by pointing out this dangerous hypocrisy. Religious modesty is NOT feminism, nor does it protect one from being raped or subject to violence or slut shaming. When the ultimate goal of fundamentalist religion is subjugation and surrender, no society can be TRULY free.

Love you, Yasmine. 10 stars.

Harrowing biography

Yasmine Mohammed explores the dangerous and harrowing contours of being brought up under and within a terrifying fundamentalism. This biography is quite an effective criticism of fundamentalism and rigid ideology generally, and of her religion specifically.

The biography reveals almost every way fundamentalist ideology can damage human communities (at every level) that live under such systems.

I think her hypothesis about the ways in which the well meaning liberal attempt to not over simplify, shortstroke, or otherwise lean on stereotypes, and simplistic hottakes criticism of minority religious positions (at least in western democracies) actually hurt progress for endangered minorities within those communities has much to recommend it. That said, I’m not sure she makes the case as effectively as the subtitle of the book suggests she will.
That hypothesis is almost just an afterthought in the last chapter.

I would like to see her really expand on this hypothesis in another volume as I think her position and approach is exactly the stance all liberals like us should take. As it is both respectful of live and let live believers while also being unapologetically critical of fundamentalist excess. Even though I don’t think her book entirely justifies the subtitle, it is an important biography, that functions as one of the strongest critiques of religion I’ve read in many years. This is the case because it is shows how completely fundamentalist religious ideology can ignore real human suffering.

Amazing story

I first heard of Yasmine on Sam Harris’s podcast and wanted to learn more about her story. Yasmine does a great job informing the reader of the horrors associated with Islam. Reading this book really humbled me and made me appreciate being a non Muslim American. Unveiled is an eye opening story of her life as a Muslim and how she escaped.

Thank you Yasmine for writing this story. You inspire and motivate me to stand up for Muslim women and children.

Thank you for writing this book! Yasmine! Thank you for speaking up

My dear lovely friend Yasmine M,
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing your story and experiences Yassmine! I cannot explain in word how I felt reading your book and parallels and commons to your story and experiences to mine ( actually to millions individuals are relatable to your book in many ways! I am so proud of you so many ways the strong woman you become despite everything you went through! I am not along that people like you and Ayaan are heroes and courageous and know what freedom and liberty is!
Thank you so much for everything and the especially the message that to world that why are stories and experiences are people like me and you aren’t welcome in mainstream media and organizations! What happen It will be a dream come true to sit down sometime and just chat with you and get to know maybe we might be able to collaborate mean listen to each other's story and what we can do to help others and educate the world and humanity regarding this topic! We have to stay vigilant/strong and stand up for these awful behaviors especially little innocent girls are getting cut every day Especially in western countries ones who live in the free countries! This breaks my heart to pieces seriously these citizen children are not even protected even though they are American citizens!!!!!!!!!! That's why I need to speak up I need to stand up for them and help those who are voiceless! Like I always tell myself or and state something regarding this topic ... if I don't do this job who is going to do it though who is going to stop this horrifying practices like FGM and other abuses/honor are killing/ especially when it comes this particular ideology! Why is this ideology/culture and teachings is untouchable and in-critique-able!! When I read your book and Ayaan HA I felt I was reading my story and experiences and cried so much that after all I wasn’t crazy nor alone! Especially, horrifying practice (FGM) that are done to many innocent little girls children! I wonder where the children protection is because we aren’t familiar with this topic or culture that we are not going to stand for all children! many of us who went FGM had no choice to escape this terrible experiences but breaks my heart to pieces to see these practices are happening in western countries as North America, Canada and Europe many other nations! But sadly, it seems like we are afraid and failed to address horrifying issues ( practices) Any human being or person who desires of helping and willing to help others, I highly recommend Yassmine M and Ayaan HA work and books please check their work and educate yourself so that you can help/save individuals!
Thank you both Yasmine and Ayaan for open the road for many of us who’s coming behind! You are both beautiful inside and out bravery of breaking the stigmas and taboos that millions of us are told no do not say anything even when our guts (instincts) are saying no say something! You are both are the heroes of millions individuals who can’t speak up yet and give hopes and encourages that anything is possible in life! Here’s my saying I have been saying and proudly especially, after read yours books now I can say it Clear and loud! (Sara, “We must fight this together because we are in it together even if we free ourselves we do not feel completely free without fighting for those who can’t do the same! I myself Sara refused to stay silent because my instincts is telling me I must speak up! And I must stand up what I believing in! Together we can make difference in the whole world and humanity!
I am sorry I wrote a lot it seems like I wrote my book already!
Thank you for listen and read and helping and saving lives because at end of the day we all matter every individual life’s matter!

A truly moving story

I have not cried while reading a book since Khaled Hosseini's Kite Runner... I cried like a baby reading this.

I cried as I heard Yasmin's voice break when reading the chapters about her abuse, that got me. To me, this is why Audible is different. I got to hear about her pain through her voice while reading, not just imagine it. I connected with her, my heart and prayers reached out to her. I wanted to protect the little girl I was reading about...

Stunning. Prepare to be brought to tears.

This book captures the pain that Muslim women undergo because of their culture and religion. Society has much to gain by hearing the numerous stories and of women like Yasmine Mohammed.

To Yasmine: Thank you for putting your story into words so the world can hear it.
