Author Robert J. Bernstein has found a different approach based on cognition thinking in helping people of all ages with ASD. The author's goal is for people with ASD to be able to live in the world and connect with the people in it as themselves, to express their unique humanity and engage more fully in the human interactions that give life meaning and make it worth the effort of getting out of bed every day. He believes that whatever he does therapeutically must be on the ASD individual’s terms; he or she must lead. His therapy examples are categorized by age groups of: two to five years of age, six to 10 years of age, 11 to 14 years of age, and 19 years of age and up.

"Robert Bernstein is one of the smartest, most perceptive people I know. No matter where someone falls on the scale of 'normal,' Bernstein finds a way to connect." (Will Shortz, Crossword Editor, The New York Times)

"I’m really excited. I’m totally blown away. It’s fantastic. There’s such hope, more than hope, already I see it working. It is unbelievable. Everything is possible. Thank you." (Eileen Fisher, talking about her son)

A Deep Dive into the World of Autism

When a friend recommended this book to me, I didn't know what to expect. A part of me assumed it would be filled with medical terms and psychological discourses but it offered a lot more.
Bernstein has done a brilliant job of writing a book that walks you deep into the world of autism in a way that is easy to grasp.
He is an astute storyteller so, the stories he weaves in with the diagnostic information of patients he worked with, even stories about his brother, give us far greater understanding and knowledge about autism. Uniquely Normal presents the subject in a clear, concise and informative way.
I couldn't put the book down and I was astonished at how much I enjoyed it and how much I learned by reading it.
This is a subject close to my heart so I am grateful for the book. I would recommend it to everyone especially parents, educators and caregivers of people who live on the autism spectrum.
Deeply impressed by this book.

Senior in HS never had a friend

This book was very illuminating! We just started working work Mr. Bernstein for help with social skills as my son has never had a friend and is finally expressing the desire to make one! I loved everything in the book because some of the examples reminded me of how far we have come already and others provider practical ways I can help my son through these next steps in life. I highly recommend not only listening to this book but reaching out to the author for help.
