Publisher's summary

Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner helped introduce the world to ultramarathoning. Now, after three decades of running ultramarathons across the globe, Dean Karnazes is still going strong. This updated and revised edition includes an afterword full of the lessons he’s picked up along the way. He gives personal details on the essential pillars of health—fitness, diet, and sleep.

What does he eat, what supplements does he take, and what kind of mattress does he sleep on? Aging well takes work, and the man who hasn’t stopped is sharing the tips and learnings that have kept him going, mile after grueling mile.

Ultramarathon Man is Karnazes’ story: the mind-boggling adventures of his nonstop treks through the shoe-melting inferno of Death Valley, the lung-freezing ferocity of the South Pole, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the towering peaks and craggy canyons of the Sierra Nevada.

With an insight and candor rarely seen in sports memoirs, he reveals how he navigates the solitary, manic, self-absorbed life of extreme ultrarunning with a full-time job, a wife, and two children, and how running has made him who he is today: a man with an ironclad body, a teenager’s energy, and a champion’s wisdom.

The motivation

love this story and Dean himself. He is great a story teller. This book has funny parts where I laughed so hard it hurt. To a part or 2 that almost make you a little sad. This book and Dean's others have all made me want to keep pushing to become a better runner and just more motivation for the difficulties of life itself.

Inspiring

Easy read. Loved the stories. Inspiring to all types of runners. Especially loved the descriptions of the great lengths ultra runners go through to finish their race.

Same book as one narrated by Dean himself

I got this book to see if there was some extras compared to the one narrated by Dean himself and while a few details changed it’s basically read word for word the same as the original narrated by Dean. Personally I think Dean did a far better job. If you see the one with the big yellow lettering on the title get that one. I can’t seem to find it on here now though. Great book you will love the stories and self reflection in this book! Now I got two copies 🤣

Great start, tone changed at the end

Great start to the book with a really interesting story. I really wish he would've gone into more detail about some of the earlier races including the western states 100 and Badwater.

The writing was on the wall early in the book, but toward the end it became a self-congratulatory, unrealistic narration. I have a hard time believing the quips and exchanges in the final race went exactly as advertised. While the feat is impressive, all humility was lost from Antarctica onward. Poor finish to an otherwise strong book.
