The title refers to the province of Tai Pi Vai. Typee was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; making him notorious as the man who lived among the cannibals.

Savage vs civilized
Who is the real savage and who is happier … a look into the authors observations as he is ‘stranded’ with the ‘savages’. He struggles with his position between worlds. With lots of exotic language (for the time) I can see why this was Melvilles most popular novel during his lifetime.
