Publisher's summary

Two necromancers, a dwarf kingdom, and a sky city - it sounds like a prelude to mayhem, and given Timmy’s luck, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

To keep his castle and earn his pardon, Timmy has his work cut out for him. Whether it’s rescuing princesses, crushing hordes of goblins, or dealing with eldritch abominations, Timmy and the gang are there to save the day - and rob the occasional crime lord.

But saving the day isn’t always easy. Timmy might be an eminently sensible necromancer, but he has to deal with a young dragon who is convinced that every problem can be eaten, an elf obsessed with property damage, an ancient vampire who can’t get through a mission without being impaled repeatedly, a semi-retired legendary swordsman, a bureaucrat who has finally mastered the art of screaming and swinging a frying pan, and an overly ambitious apprentice doing her best to be more menacing despite loving the color pink.

It’s hardly a surprise when things don’t exactly go to plan.

With war on the horizon, Timmy and the others have their hands full. Rescuing a princess can be difficult at the best of times, but rescuing a princess from one of the most powerful crime lords in the world? That’s going to be tricky.

And that’s not their only problem. Ever wonder whose job it is to deal with rampaging hordes of goblins that are about to overwhelm a kingdom of dwarves? Well, that’s Timmy’s job. Isn’t he lucky? On the upside, he finally has an excuse to deploy another army of zombies. He’s going to teach those goblins a very important lesson: Never, ever get into a war of attrition with a necromancer.

One necromancer is dangerous. Two necromancers with a dragon, a vampire, a swordsman, an elf, and a bureaucrat - that’s downright deadly.

Love it!

I love this series and enjoyed this story so much I am listening to it again! The team saves a princess, overturns a crime lord, visits an alien world, rescues the Dwarf kingdom, wipe out a goblin strong hold and finds a city that has been lost for centuries. They do all of that without a break. A battle between the Eternal Empire and Everton brings in all the friends that we have met in the series and gives Vicky an opportunity to show her stuff. War is inevitable and our friends who were once working behind the scenes is now known to the emperor.
Spot is adorable, unless you threaten him with a potted plant. He and Avraniel really grows in their abilities. Everyone on the team reaches new heights in their abilities and has an opportunity to save the world. An old friend with a new attitude moves into the castle.
The character interaction is funny. There is lots of gore and carnage but what do you expect with several battles. There is great action, Timmy does not disappoint with his great shovel moves and you know how Avraniel enjoys using her fire.

I need more

I’ve just finished the Unconventional Heroes series and I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment of every book. Fred Bergman is a stellar narrator who brings life to each character. L. G. Estrella’s imagination and ability to intertwine multiple storylines and characters lives seamlessly appears effortless. Do yourself a favor, read (or rather listen to) this series in it’s entirety. I can only hope a sequel is forthcoming.

Each Book Better Than The Last!!!

First off, my preference to listening to audio books is between 1.7x-2.3x normal speed.

The first couple books series I was listening to at a faster pace because I needed to test out the waters of what the story could be. By this 4th book I slowed down my listening pace to 1.7x to savor the brilliant writing and story that L. G. Estrella has given us. With each passing book the stories and character’s development has just been astounding. I hope there will one day be more books to this main series. I look forward to going through the other side stories just as long as Fred Berman is the narrator, he’s been a fantastic addition to bringing these stories alive.

Another fantastic addition!

This series is so fun! I love the characters. And the story keeps building up to larger and larger world events. I am very eager for more installments in the series.

Wonderful narration, charming story

As always, Fred Berman does an amazing job giving this story it's voice. I'm not a huge fan of Avranial's voice, but everyone else sounds amazing and distinctive, which isn't always the case with audio books. The story is still charming and kind of heartwarming. It repeats some details a little too often, and seems to have some small anachronisms that don't quite fit but none stick out so much that i have specific examples right now and ultimately it's still funny and fun with great characters who manage to to stay consistent and still subvert from time to time. I only wish I had a Timmy in my life when I was younger, and would put him in the same league as Uncle Iroh in the wholesome father figure department. I highly suggest the series for people looking for a lighthearted listen that manages to make you smile, both with humor and genuine warmth.

Another fantastic entry into the series.

It's really wonderful when a good series remains good. Just like the previous books, this one does not disappoint. The book moves closer to the war with the eternal empire and we see more world expansion by meeting the dwarves, and the shimmering isles. Also, we learn more about the alternate dimensions and finally see the crew in a desperate fight against an Eldritch horror. Interesting moments are when we learn more about the vampire's past, the legend of the star maiden, the floating city, and glimpse more about old man's history and power. All in all, this was a very great entry into the series. I highly recommend it.

A wonderful trip

This is a wonderful trip through the fantasy realm in a unique way! The light humor, the dire events are great but the characters constructed are amazing. Yes Spot is my favorite too.
