It's Not About the Tapas: A Spanish Adventure on Two Wheels | [Polly Evans]

It's Not About the Tapas: A Spanish Adventure on Two Wheels

When Polly Evans set off on a journey round Spain by bicycle, she found more adventures than she had bargained for: She survived a nail biting encounter with a sprightly pig, escaped over-zealous suitors, had her morality questioned by locals and indulged in her love of regional cooking. While she pedalled, Polly pondered some of the more lurid details of Spanish history - the king who collected pickled heads and the unfortunate duchess who lost her feet.

    "Viva Espana"

Absolutely great, I loved the description of Spanish Taxi drivers, Hoteliers,Drunks all laced with a good Spanish history lesson.
Lucy Scott makes it all come to life.

"a truly amazing feat on two wheels"

When I started the book I really did not know what to expect. I found out so much more than the problems of travelling on two wheels, local quirks and customs, history and humour. The author gives an insightful view of the hidden Spain, and the variation in the culture across her journey. It was difficult to detach yourself from the adventure. A truly memorable experience to be party to.

"Excellent read about travels around Spain !!"
What made the experience of listening to It's Not About the Tapas the most enjoyable?

The story is well written and very funny, I laughed out loud several times! Prolly Evans is an entertaining story teller and Lucy Scott was an expressive narrator! Excellent well worth the read!

Have you listened to any of Lucy Scott’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I really enjoy listening to Lucy Scott because she is very expressive and uses different voices for different characters. I have listened to Lucy narrate the classics which she excelled at!

    Any additional comments?

I wish all of Polly Evan's books will be recorded as she is an entertaining storyteller using imaginative language, giving the reader an insight into travelling around whatever country she is writing about!!!

    "Entertaining, but opinionated"

The book has some entertainment-value and contains some interesting historical facts about Spain. However, some of the humour is enjoyable, if you are British. I have read a review by a Spanish guy on another site about it, and I fully agree with his view that the author sometimes puts down the Spanish culture for the sake of making a joke. Also, it would have been much better to have someone read it, who is actually fluent in Spanish, the reader keeps changing between more or less successful attempts of pronouncing the words correctly and pronouncing them in a sort of English way, which makes me cringe!

"cycling: a bit of a Lemon"

Is this a book about Spain it's culture and food, a user friendly flick through the history of Europe, or one womans voyage of self discovery? If the author doesn't know then how are we supposed to? Trying hard to be cute and sassy but actually a bit annoying it's not funny, not interesting, doesn't make you jealous and won't make you get on your Bike. The cultural insight I was hoping for is in there at the start of the book but that is in Hong Kong before the writer leaves for Spain, and that's where it ends. The better bits might just about get you reaching for the Wine and Olives but then you could enjoy those better without this attempt at girlie whimsey.

    "Pedal power"

This is a marvellous combination of a travelog and a cyclist's slightly skewed slant on Spain and the Spanish. Polly Evans' heroic cycle ride through the Spanish Pyrenees and in the Moorish south is filled with interesting snippets about the people (past and present) and places that she visits.

Although I'm not inspired to follow on my bike I feel it is a marvellous taster of Spain; she makes me feel that it is a country worth exploring. Obviously to be able to speak the language would be an added advantage in trying to understand the peoples of its various regions, especially when travelling off the beaten tourist track and when encountering the frustrations of x, y or z situation.

A well-narrated and amusing tale of determined, well-read young woman's cycling trip in Spain. Dip into it before your Spanish holiday.
