Publisher's summary

When best-selling mystery writer David Rosenfelt and his family moved from Southern California to Maine, he thought he had prepared for everything. They had mapped the route, brought three GPSs for backup, as well as refrigerators full of food, and stoves and microwaves on which to cook them. But traveling with 25 dogs turned out to be a bigger ordeal than he anticipated, despite RVs, the extra kibble, volunteers (including a few readers), and camping equipment.

Rosenfelt recounts the adventure of moving his animal companions across the United States with humor and warmth, and tells the tale of how he and his wife became passionate foster parents for rescue dogs, culminating in the creation of the Tara Foundation and successfully placing several thousand dogs with loving families.

David Rosenfelt, a native of Paterson, NJ, is a graduate of NYU. He was a former marketing president for Tri-Star Pictures before becoming a novelist. Narrator Jeff Steitzer has appeared on Broadway in "Inherit The Wind" and "Mary Poppins" in regional threaters around the country, and is the Multiplayer Announcer for all HALO video Games.

Critic reviews

“Jeff Steitzer's deep, pleasant voice is enjoyable to listen to, and he aptly portrays the couple's fervent devotion to the task of rescuing dogs from shelters. His pacing and intonation help to keep the listener in the story of how the couple came to amass so many dogs, the varied personalities of their canine family members, and the way they managed to transfer their household cross-country via recreational vehicles and a team of fellow dog enthusiasts. Listeners who are dog lovers will be inspired.” (Audiofile)

Dog tripping

Loved the book! I read it straight through and even played portions for my husband. We laughed together at the many wonderful dog antics he described so well. I could visualize it all. I would have loved to go on that epic journey to Maine. Thank you for writing such a fun book. Each one of those dogs were imprinted on my heart. This book will be read again.

A must for dog lovers

Being a fan of David Rosenfelt and a dog lover, I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh out loud on one page and tear up on the next. Great, true adventure.

What an ordeal, I mean adventure!

Oh boy. I could definitely relate to David and his wife's mission to save dogs from the shelter. I'm not sure some people would understand all he went through to take 25 dogs cross country to their new home. As a dog rescue volunteer, I know many dogs are dumped when a family moves. Very sad and a heartless thing to do.
The author mixes in stories of how they acquired the dogs they rescued while telling of their ordeal, oops, I mean adventure to move from the West coast to the East coast of New England.
I could see myself volunteering to help.
If you are a dog rescuer, this is an uplifting must read.
I have only read one of his mystery novels "Play Dead". I rated it 4 stars. One of his characters in his "regular" books is one of his passed dogs, Luna. Mr. Rosenfelt said he will never kill off Luna in his books. She will live forever in his written word.

Moving was never like this!

Story is full of laugher and self-deprecating slams at the author, but it is obvious that he and his wife loved these animals with all their different personalities and wanted to move to a forever home. David Rosenfelt can sure tell a great true story as well as a mystery! Filled with descriptions of the dogs and people you feel like you are there and, like those other lunatics, are sure enjoying the ride! A great personal experience told by the leader of the pack!

Entertaining, funny, uplifting. Loved it all!

You don't have to be a fanatical dog lover to enjoy this wonderful story. David Rosenfelt is a terrific writer who happens to love dogs. His self-effacing telling of this remarkable trip across the country with more than twenty dogs is a hoot! Proving again that "truth is stranger than fiction". I hope we will be treated to a "part two" of this engaging story as soon as David catches his breath.

Good Dog Stories

Mt Rosenfelt needs to stick to fiction. Although this was interesting, there were more stories (entertaining, well written) on their lives in dog rescue. That was fine. The trip itself did create challenges, but they were not the main focus of this book. As much as it was all enjoyable, I kind of felt misled.

The best part??

Is when David promises to never kill off Tara. Honestly, though, you will enjoy this listen if:
1. You like the Andy series
2. You like dogs.
3. You are in the mood for something “light”.

I liked it! It’s no “Andy”.... but you can tell it’s Andy’s alter ego.

Loved this book!

This is a different type of David Rosenfelt book. It hit home for me because I am a dog lover and have often transported rescues to their forever home. I could relate to his scenarios but even someone without that experience would love this book!
