The relationship between Bill and Katz.
Cloying...Bill Bryson is nothing if not dry, and I found Mr Roberts to be obvious and, sorry...annoying.
I'm already a fan of Bill and read the book years ago, but this is how good it was - while doing a non-stop 100km charity walk, I saved this for the midnight to dawn section and it was so entertaining and engrossing that I pretty much forgot I was on a rutted track in the pitch dark and had been walking for 20 hours. All I remember of those hours are Bill's stories of preparing for and slogging up and down Appalachian mountains which not only made what I was doing seem really easy but I'm pretty sure made me the only person on the track who was laughing out loud. For that alone I have to give it 5 stars.
I enjoyed this book it was great.I like Bryson's sense of humour always makes me laugh out loud.
Hilariously funny book - loved every minute of it. So well brilliantly well read. I recommend this to everyone, all the time.
Katz ditching half the contents of his pack on the first day. And Bill's understandable terror of BEARS!!!!!
Down Under, Neither Here nor there, Made in America, Notes from a big country. All extremely well read, William Roberts conveys the humour better than Bill Bryson himself.
If you go into the woods tonight...Prepare for a Bear surprise!
Everyone should read this!
I have read this book several times over the years, and I enjoy it every-time. It is a wonderful book and I love his humor.
I will be listening to this book again. It has so much detail, so many interesting facts that I feel I have hardly touched it with only one listening.
I love the little everyday details that made me feel I was there on the trail. And I liked the excursions off the track to the quirky history all around the Appalachian trail.
William Roberts made this book for me. He brought so much humour and character to his task. I've heard Bill Bryson narrate his other books, but he could never bring the professional style to the job that William Roberts achieves.
I listen to a chapter at a time on my train commute, but sometimes if I haven't finished the chapter I will wait on the platform and continue listening till the chapter ends.
Inspires me to do an adventure walk myself. But definitely not the Appalachain trail - too hard! I liked his description of a walk in Europe though.
I really really enjoyed this book- it made want to walk at least some of the trail someday. Which is saying something given how lazy I am. Bill Bryson is one of the best travel writers ever and this is a shining example of his best work

I liked the way the author interwove some natural history with his story but would have found it more interesting and more entertaining if there was more about his walking through the woods. Sometimes I found it a little slow when he'd "side-track". I didnt' find it as funny as other reviewers did.
fantastic story, well narrated, bryson at his best again, very well paced and never dull, almost makes you want to join him, though at a 2400 km walk not quite
As a person who does quite a bit of hiking herself, I really enjoyed this book, it's funny, it's entertaining and it certainly makes you want to pack and head out for your own adventure. William Robertson's narrating is just excellent.
"A walk in the woods"
This is my favourite audio book. I love Bryson's dry wit mixed with his often critical assessment of how Americans fail to look after the woods and wildlife they should be protecting. I can understand his desire to walk the Appalachian Trail and listening to this audio book often inspires me to go walking myself (though not 2,000 miles).
Bryson and Stephen Katz set off into the american wilderness only to find they are way out of their depth. With dangers such as bears, mountain lions, moose and more importantly Bryson's own vivid imagination the pair stumble their way along the trail. This book is packed with humour.
William Roberts' narration is perfect and helps to put Bill Bryson's audio books as a must have for any a.b. collection. I hope Audible get more of Bryson's books, Their worth a listen.
"a new bryson fan"
i have only jsut started to read bill bryson. this book was fun and amusing as was the other i read (small town america) and i think i will read the rest. yes there are a lot of references to trees etc but he is walking the appilation trail. the reader, whom i think must read all his books, reads it so well.
"wilderness adventure from the comfort of home"
I really enjoyed Bill Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods' because it combines humour which can make you laugh out loud (usually at the expense of fools whom Bryson meets along the way) and a real sense of the beauty and wonder of North America's natural hertiage.
Bryson's descriptions are able to pick out the most interesting details of places and people which entertain the listener throughout and his criticism of everything wrong with the US attitude to the environment also struck a cord with me. Despite some merciless attacks on government agencies who fail to protect America's wood lands, the author manages to convey a love for his native country which inspires you to follow in his footsteps. I will definately be downloading more Bill Bryson books in the future.
the humour Bill Bryson brings to every day situations
anything else by the author
Helped me make my mind up that this walk is a bit too hardcore for me
"Really loved this book"
I'm a big fan of Bill Bryson but this is one of my favourites , entertaining and charming , also glad it's being made into a film !
A well read, great book. Good mix of adventure, characters and interesting facts & stories.
"Bryson at his best"
What a delight and a hilarious adventure I have enjoyed listening to this over and over. It should come with a warning .. Do not listen to this in public. The book has the same effect. Bryson is so talented. And now Robert Redford stars in the movie can't wait to see it. No spoiler alert but you must read this book to see for you self what happens when to friends take a walk in the woods. Enjoy.
"Always a good yarn"
Another winner for me. I love Bill Bryson's style and humour. Makes me laugh out loud, and he know how to tell a good story. Makes me want to walk the AT!
"A great book, excellent narrator"
I read this book on pages years ago and I have just finished listening to this audio version. I think this is the best book Bill Bryson has ever written. An engaging story of walking through the woods! Like all good books it has inspired me. I must get out and see more of the natural world, bring me the back pack...
"A wonderful listen!"
I love this narrator (much easier to listen to than Bryson himself imo). The story is interesting, informative, very funny and poignant. I have listened 3 times.
