Resumen del Editor

A peaceful summer night is shattered by gunfire as an unseen assailant tries to murder police officer John Busby. Though horribly wounded, Busby survives. But the perpetrator remains at large, meaning neither Busby, nor his wife, nor their three children are safe.

In separate chapters John and his daughter, Cylin, who was nine at the time, recount the story of that year. John writes graphically, and movingly, of his wounds, his pain, his multiple surgeries, and his rage. Cylin tells their story from a child’s point of view, sharing vivid memories of confusion, loss of friends, and the struggle to build a new life.

Together, father and daughter craft an unforgettable picture of fear, of police corruption, and of a malignant thug who no one dares to cross. Yet their story is also one of redemption and recovery, and ultimately of hope and healing.

Heartbreaking. Justice just out of reach.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, perfect example of how bad things happen when good men stand by and do nothing. The man who shot John Busby got by with it because he was a bully who scared others into LETTING him get by with it all.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel sorry for the family, made me appreciate those who take public service seriously and made me MAD as hell at those who stand by and do nothing.

Amazing story

I love how the story is written in the words of the daughter and then in the words of the dad. So you see things from both of their perspective. I love the book enough that I did read it twice.

Compelling

4.5 STARS

THE YEAR WE DISAPPEARED is unlike any memoir I’ve read. Alternating chapters between father John Busby and his daughter Cylin tell the story of John’s shooting and his nine-year-old daughter’s perception of the events.

A policeman in a corrupt force on Cape Cod, John throws around his weight, but refuses to allow the town crime boss and his cronies a free pass. He escapes a hitman with his life, but is left gravely injured, his family still targeted. Cylin’s world is turned upside down, her friends’ parents won’t let her play with them, fearing for their safety. Police officers follow her bus to school and stand outside her classroom. Her mom is devastated and overwhelmed, leaving Cylin to try to figure out what’s going on.

I couldn’t wait to see what happened next, knowing only that father and daughter survived long enough to write the memoir. I didn’t want their story to end and was glad for the “where are they now” interview at the end of the book.

It pulls you in quick

I loved the concept of the story being from father and daughters perspective. It really gives you a complete understanding of the various levels of pain this family went through.

absolutely awesome

There story is truly a sad and frustrating one to listen to. the book itself is great and the lessons they learn and tell about throughout the story is even better. Really do hope they get the justice they all deserve one day.

A little slow

I found the story to be interesting and it was great to get the perspective of both father and daughter, but I did feel like the story dragged a little.

Mostly slow-paced true story told from two perspectives

This family’s story is gripping and absolutely worth hearing. The book tends to backtrack and retell each chapter from a different perspective and it really should have been a few hours shorter. The musical transitions from chapter to chapter are odd and don’t fit the general tone of the book.
