Publisher's summary

An absorbing tale of love, sacrifice, family ties, and magic, set in the Pacific Northwest in the aftermath of World War II, by the author of A Secret History of Witches.

Barrie Anne Blythe and her aunt Charlotte have always known that the other residents of their small coastal community find them peculiar - two women living alone on the outskirts of town. It is the price of concealing their strange and dangerous family secret.

But two events threaten to upend their lives forever. The first is the arrival of a mysterious abandoned baby with a hint of power like their own. The second is the sudden reappearance of Barrie Anne's long-lost husband - who is not quite the man she thought she married.

Together, Barrie Anne and Charlotte must decide how far they are willing to go to protect themselves - and the child they think of as their own - from suspicious neighbors, the government, and even their own family....

Fascinating story

Characters are complex and fully formed. Story held my interest from beginning to end. As always, Dara Rosenberg brought the perfect balance of strength and vulnerability to them all.
A truly wonderful read.

It was good. But.....

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 bc there are unanswered questions at the end. There are aliens in this book & govt agents asking questions about the aliens. They are fairly inconsequential to the story except that the found baby appears to be one of them. Other than that, nothing else about the aliens or where the baby came from. Unless, she'd planning a sequel, the story would have been better served by losing the alien line altogether. Other than that, the story of the relationship of the characters is worth the credit.

an odd twist

I love the story line. It has a few strange twist but that added a nice supernatural feel. However I do wish it included more witchy things. All in all, I recommend for a short read.

A nice read

Pretty good story. I enjoyed listening to it. I liked the way it desceibed the present day and the past piecing the story together. Always interesting to remember what a Woman had to expect and deal with during the 30's - 40's in the US. Made me grateful I live during this time and a reminder that the "old days" weren't better for everybody.

Wanted it to be better

I have read all of Louisa Morgan’s books and I wanted this one to be better the. It was. I love her other books but this one was not at the same level. That being said it’s still a good book

Loved the History of Witches

This one was just OK. History of Witches....was really great. This one I didn’t like as much....slow, storyline...eh. Not my favorite.

Unique and imaginitive

I like the story and the characters. There were story twists and developed characters. The narration was confusing a couple of times because the women voices sometimes merged but over all it was good. Some of the plot came out of left field but I liked that it kept you questioning. Definitely would suggest this book to a friend.

Finding inner strength & magic in motherhood

The story does bounce forward and back but I didn't have any issue with that as long as I was paying attention to the chapter titles. I'm from the Pacific NW so I really enjoyed that aspect of the story. I thought it was interesting that this story takes place during a similar time period as the first book but brings an American perspective on how WW2 effected society.

I will recommend this to my friends that enjoy this genre. Now on to the authors next audio book. 🙂📚
