Publisher's summary

Poitiers was in the past, but it changed the life of Sir John Hawkwood, for he gained his spurs and that was another step on his journey. Once he realised that he had more ambition than just to serve the king of England, he joined forces with Albert Sterz and formed a company of mercenaries who hired out their swords. Fighting for the king of England against Burgundy, they gained a reputation which made others both fear and hate them in equal measure. When Sir John is robbed of his fortune by the murder of his banker, then he had an enemy to pursue. He learns to become a political animal who chooses friends wisely. His enemies just proliferate with each victory. The defeats merely make him and the White Company even stronger!

Very graphic !!

I enjoyed the first two books and almost enjoyed the third. The Battles became very repetitive and the battle descriptions more horrific . I started to dislike Sir John as he became more greedy and violent . The Narrator was the best I’ve ever heard he was the one that kept me listening .

A good story and background

Hawkwood is a story of the struggle of London youth. This one being a more resourceful one and not too wrapped up in the Church. He fought for and conceived his path to the money necessary for a comfortable life for himself and his Troops. He defines loyalty to self and to his friends and subordinates.

Griff & Marston

Aside from Snyder and Greely, probably not a better combination with story and narrator performance. Marston has that knack of bringing every story to life and the Harkwood series ranks very highly for me. Great story line, great performance and an overall great listen. A must have for any historical buff or anyone that loves a great story.

The fighting in Italy was a new point of view vs. the traditional English vs the French

I am feeling better about the first person telling of the tale. Looking forward to the next audio book in the series.

A story of greed and sociopathy

Listening to the series, it's slowly dawned on me that the primary character has no real redeeming qualities beyond a thirst for money, power and violence. If that's your thing, this may be the book for you!
