Publisher's summary

For Jack Cho, a fortysomething gay man, being able to marry someone he loves is so unfamiliar it’s terrifying. Then a wedding invitation from a college friend brings about a collision with those fears--and his own secret history.

Jack and his new boyfriend, Caleb, are attending the wedding of Jack’s estranged straight friend Scott. No sooner do the guests start to mingle than questions arise about relationships, tradition, Jack’s feelings for the groom, and what’s at stake as he navigates daunting territory, both new and old. In this wry and surprising short story, award-winning author Alexander Chee extends an invitation to the party--and awakening--of a lifetime.

Alexander Chee’s The Weddings is part of Inheritance, a collection of five stories about secrets, unspoken desires, and dangerous revelations between loved ones. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single sitting. By yourself, behind closed doors, or shared with someone you trust.

The Weddings by Alexander Chee

I was not prepared for the excellent prose and biting commentary in this short story within the series "The Inheritance". This story is by far the best of the lot as it speaks interestingly of race, identity, and relationships. And it's a little about the tenants of marriage - LGBTQ and straight.

Definitely grabbed my attention from the start and had lots of staying power as the story unfolded. I would definitely like to see these characters in a full-length novel.

I liked it.

Shorts aren’t usually my go-to, but this one wasn’t bad. Narration was good and story was engaging. The writing was good.

Not a lot of plot. It’s more of a snapshot of a window of time in one man’s life and a reflection on past relationships.

If you like shorts, this is a good one.

Meh

The story has a great message, I just found it to be boring and couldn't wait for it to be over.

Good prose but not much story

That's about all I have to say....this is a short story that kept me thinking "what is the point of this story" ?

Short, but hardly a trifle

Chee manages to pack longing, humor, romance, and tragedy into a delightfully short presentation (much like the best weddings).

Perfect

As a queer person of color who remembers the 90s and Janet Jackson and went to a liberal arts college this book super resonated with me. I liked the ambiguous plot because that’s how those people are in your life. They never really go away even when you’re done. It felt real and I liked the simple yet evocative writing style.

Pretty Good!

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. Well written and well narrated. Kept my attention and interest all the way through. A story of one man’s perspective of a past relationship which comes into question when, years later, he is invited to this friend’s wedding. This short story is definitely worth a listen!
