Publisher's summary

Explore the Captivating History of the Wars of the Roses!

The Wars of the Roses were a complex set of battles, skirmishes, and kidnappings during the 15th century in England. They had their roots in the nearby Civil War of France, which greatly influenced English politics for years to come. Though there is no one universally-accepted start or end date for these wars, the major events throughout the wars occurred between 1455 and 1485.

The central reason for the Wars of the Roses, otherwise referred to as the 15th century English Civil War, was a tug-of-war between two families for the throne of England. Though both families were in fact closely related, they had split half a century earlier. Instead of one unified Plantagenet family, the cousins became Lancasters and Yorks. While the Lancasters remained on the throne, the Yorks were overlooked in the succession of kings. The Yorks became jealous, given their equal relation to England’s ancient monarchy, and when the Plantagenet-Lancaster dynasty appeared tragically weakened by the succession of Henry VI, the royal cousins took the opportunity to demand a new ruler.

In this book, you will discover topics such as:

  • A short history of the House of Plantagenet
  • Civil war in France
  • England’s loss and a king’s Illness
  • Treason by the Duke of York
  • The Battle of Northampton

This is a clearly written

It's an historical fiction, albeit pretty close to what actually happened. I enjoyed it this coverage of the main characters that played out the drama of the war of the roses.

Sometimes difficult to follow

The War of the Roses was concise but not brief. I very much agree that the Game of Thrones is based on this story. It is interesting how the true story like the War of the Roses seems like fiction in the Game of Thrones on seems like nonfiction.

A very simplistic history

It was perfect for what I needed…I expected this book to be a long slog but it was short, concise and informative. A fascinating era in English history is given life.

Accurate AND a pleasure

Of a time in history that changed the course of the English monarchies and ruling factions. Recommend for those needing filler to a more comprehensive story.

With too much detail

If you enjoy reading about the War of the Roses, then you should give this book, and series, a try. I think you will enjoy it. Great way of blending his story with history.

INFORMATIVE

Lots of excellent information. Most I knew, but it was good to see. Good timeline in the end, also. Good! Great! Better than fiction!

Gave you a pretty good overview of the war

Gives a good short summary of an interesting period of history….quite informative. I enjoy the Tudors and this short history is an excellent introduction to that part of our history.

Atrocious narration, poor timing, not recommended

I have read hundreds of history books over the years and have listened to dozens of audio books on history. This is perhaps the worst I have heard. The text is dry, with no real effort put in to making it dynamic or to provide appropriate spacing. I very much doubt it was written for audio, but if it was, then someone needs to try harder. As to the narration: it is like listening to a computer, overly fast (yes, I know you can adjust speed), with little to no intonation or phrasing and no attempt at all to pause between sections let alone key points. I am dissapointed. The War of the Roses is a stunning and captivating tale, if told better and it is rich with military, biographical, political and criminal fact. I will watch for a better telling.
