Dolittle does a LOT for kids!

I used to wonder if listening to a book was as productive or interesting as reading one. The conclusion I have come to is a definitive YES! It allows you to multi-task, as well as allow your imagination to visualize the storyline’s characters. I also have grandkids who struggle with dyslexia and reading in general, and find reading printed books challenging. This new Dr. Dolittle book by Ms. Martinez is cleverly written, with obvious thought-out structure changes from the original manuscript, that makes both readers or listeners comfortable. The narration is done with shrewd and age appropriate verbiage and an engaging bit of English accent. This book is also a godsend for children who need rest or recuperation from illness, distraction and/or busy parents who have good intentions, but not a lot of time. Enjoyable for adults to listen to with your kids as well. Christmas is coming!

LOVED all the voices! Highly recommend for kids!

I really enjoyed this Revised, Newly Illustrated Edition of The Story of Doctor Dolittle. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is Fantastic!! He must have done at least 15 different voices (while talking as if he were one of the different animal characters, or the different people characters), and it really made the story come alive!

I definitely like how this edition took out the previous inappropriate language, and added a new magical element about half-way through the book. I could see how this would be one of those books that a family would want to get both the physical book to enjoy the illustrations, and also the audiobook to enjoy the narrator and the different voices.

I would recommend this book to families with children of all ages. Whether the child can read alone or not, all children will enjoy this story. This is an intermediate reader style chapter book. Children and families alike will have fun learning how Doctor Dolittle went from being a “people doctor” to an “animal doctor,” and how he and his animal crew sailed to Africa to heal the monkeys, outsmarted a band of pirates, and more.
