Publisher's summary

For more than 30 years, investigative journalist and New York Times best-selling author Craig Pittman has chronicled the wildest stories Florida has to offer. Featuring a selection of columns that have appeared in the Tampa Bay Times and other outlets throughout Pittman's career, this book highlights just how strange and wonderful Florida can be.

With a folksy style, an eye for the absurd, and a passion for the history and environment of his home state, Pittman describes some of Florida's oddest wildlife as well as its quirkiest people. The State You're In includes a love story involving the most tattooed woman in the world, a deep dive into the state's professional mermaid industry, and an investigation of a battle between residents of a nudist resort and the US Postal Service. Pittman introduces listeners to a who's who of Florida crime fiction, a what's what of exotic animals, and an array of beloved places he's seen change rapidly in his lifetime.

Many of these stories are funny, some are serious, and several offer rare insights into the heart of the Sunshine State. For Pittman, Florida is both inspiring and dangerous-an "evolutionary test" for those who live in it. Together these pieces paint a complex picture of a fascinating state longing for an identity beyond palm trees and punchlines.

Florida Man and More

I found this book to be enjoyable and another great book by the author. I have previously listened to Cat Tale about the FL Panther .

Maybe you have to be a native?

Boring? Seriously?
I read, for reasons other than joy sometimes, lots of "brainy" books. I teach and try to keep up with all those things that we should, climate change, the state of our social consciousness, staying sane and to do that I have to have a Craig Pittman, a Dave Barry, a Carl Hiaasen once in a while. Candy for the brain, a deep breath, a bareback gallop through the real Florida woods.
I remember some of these stories though not all. I remember Florida the way it was before it, like Beggar, was "loved to death".
Matt Godfrey was easy listening, much like the author himself if you've ever heard him talk.
I didn't want to finish this, I need another Craig Pittman in my library, just to know it's there, for when the seriousness of it all closes in on me.

Pittman Classic

An interesting bunch of stories that give laughs, nostalgia, learning, and insight. Makes want to subscribe to a newspaper again.

BORING!! 💤💤

It's like listening to paint drying. I can't bear to listen past chapter 7 and I'm submitting a refund request.
